Tom Hanks faces a race against time in the first teaser for Ron Howard's biblical threequel, Inferno.

Currently poised at three minutes to midnight – with the powers of the world citing fears of nuclear war and climate change – the Doomsday Clock stands as a symbolic countdown to humanity’s annihilation. It’s a barometer for destruction that ticks worryingly close to doomsday in today’s all-new teaser for Dan Brown’s long-awaited sequel, Inferno.

One man standing between humanity and the end of days is Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks), the series protagonist that headlined both The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demos and here, we see the near-impossible task that awaits our religious professor.

Featuring a script by David Koepp (Angels & Demons), Inferno picks up at a time when deranged, transhumanist scientist Bertrand Zobrist aims to summon forth the powers of Dante’s Inferno – namely a devastating plague that would make even the bubonic plague seem like a mild affliction – to bring about global capitulation.

What doesn’t help matters is the fact that Langdon, recovering from an accident, wakes up “in an Italian hospital with amnesia. There, he teams up with Sienna Brooks, a doctor he hopes will help him recover his memories and prevent a madman from releasing a global plague connected to Dante’s ‘Inferno.'”

Also starring Rogue One‘s Felicity Jones as a medical expert, Sidse Babett Knudsen (The Duke Of Burgundy), Omar Sy and Irrfan Khan, Inferno emerges from the fiery pits of development limbo in time for October 28.
