As one of the members of the controversial 80’s and 90’s rap group 2 Live Crew, Luther ‘Luke’ Campbell has officially declared that he is running for mayor of Miami-Dade County, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the United States. He is just one of twelve people who have declared their candidacy for the position.

It may be hard to believe that the man whose group gave us such sophisticated hits as “Face Down, Ass Up” and “Me So Horny” is running for mayor but is it any more ridiculous than the Terminator running for (and being elected as) the governor of California?

Campbell’s group 2 Live Crew single handedly created the booty bass sub-genre in the 1980’s and their 1989 LP ‘As Nasty As They Wanna Be’ was actually declared by a Florida court to be “legally obscene” before Campbell appealed the ruling and won. The album was later certified double platinum.

Campbell is aware of his past reputation and addressed this in an interview with Miami’s CBS 4:

“My major hurdle is people taking me seriously, a lot of people think this is a joke. I call it a banana republic and I’m serious about it. You look at the commission and they make their own rules as they go, regardless of what the county attorney says, they make their own rules, just do what they want. They have no respect for the people.”
