This past weekend, Porter Robinson fans in attendance at a special Monstercat afterparty for Digital Dreams festival in Toronto were in for a real treat. The young DJ/producer made a bold departure from the live shows of his Worlds tour by surprising those in attendance with a special DJ set packed with fan favorites and novel arrangements alike.

Robinson kicked off the set with in-game music from the classic video game The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, which found its way back into the set from time to time (the most noteworthy of which being when he mashed it up with Juicy J, Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz’ “Bandz A Make Her Dance”). In addition to his own serene soundscapes from last year’s Worlds, he mixed in tracks from the likes of Flume, Cashmere Cat and Madeon, and ended the set with his own euphoric remix of Nero’s “The Thrill.”

While Worlds marked a significant change in style for Robinson, whose career originally started at the age of 19 when electronic music tastemaker Skrillex discovered him, his mix at the Monstercat label showcase proves that he’s grown into it well. In a music scene whose younger artists seem to be struggling to define themselves, it looks as though Robinson’s newfound musical identity seems to be fitting him like a glove.
