Squid Game creator admits fans ‘got surprisingly close’ to solving final mystery

According to CBR, ‘Squid Game’ became a global hit when it launched on Netflix in 2021. The show tells a story about desperate people competing in deadly versions of children’s games. It made strong points about modern Korean society and capitalism while keeping viewers entertained.

However, the creator has not made any public statements about fans getting close to solving the final mystery, contrary to what the title suggests, though fans have been developing elaborate theories about the show’s deeper mysteries since the first season. Instead, Hwang has focused on explaining his vision for the final season’s direction and themes.

Season 3 will feature more intense and frightening games

The show creator wants the final season’s games to be more intense than ever before. “In the case of Season 3, I wanted to introduce games that could really show the lowest bottom of human beings, because the series itself is reaching its climax,” Hwang told Entertainment Weekly. He added that he wanted very intense games to bring out the worst parts of human nature.

The new season will also bring back the fear of heights that was missing in Season 2. Hwang explained that Season 1 had games like Tug of War that used height to create fear. Season 2 did not have this element. “That is why in Season 3, I decided to introduce games that could really infuse fear in people with sheer height,” he said.

This means viewers will likely see characters falling to their deaths in the upcoming season. The games will be based on traditional Korean children’s games, just like in previous seasons. Hwang keeps a list of these games that he refers to when creating new episodes. The Season 3 poster shows the return of Red Light, Green Light, which was featured in the first season.

The story follows the main character Gi-hun, played by Lee Jung-jae, as he tries to stop the deadly games. In Season 2’s finale, he attempted to lead a rebellion against the game organizers. However, this failed and resulted in many deaths, including his friend Jung-bae. Now he must go back into the games once again.

Hwang has planned a clear ending for the series from the beginning, though he previously revealed he considered alternative endings that might have better satisfied audiences. He could have continued the show for many more seasons due to its success, but he knew how he wanted to wrap up the story. Each season has focused on different themes related to capitalism and competition in modern society.

The final season will explore how people can keep their humanity during intense competition. “I wanted to focus on how we can preserve our sense of humanity and how we should remain humans even amidst this intense competition,” Hwang explained. He wants to pose this as a final question for viewers to consider.

An important new element in Season 3 will be Jun-hee’s baby. The character, played by Jo Yu-ri, is pregnant, and Hwang revealed that the baby will play a major role in the final season. “This baby plays a very important role in Season 3, not just for Jun-hee, but for the fate of everyone inside,” he said. The baby’s crying can be heard in the season trailer, hinting at its significance to the plot.
