3LAU’s Remix Of Shawn Mendes’ “Stitches” Fails To Impress

Remixes are as big a part of EDM as kandi bracelets, clever totems and high-profile lawsuits, but there's definitely a right way and a wrong way to do them. Between cyberstalking critics and speaking out against the #RealDJing movement, 3LAU has made his fair share of missteps, and while his remix of Shawn Mendes' "Stitches" may not be as severe as those, I'll still count it among them.

There’s more to a remix than adding some synth plucks and 808 drum rolls. The original version of “Stitches” featured rich instrumentals that tastefully complimented Mendes’ infectious top line without fighting for attention, but 3LAU’s contributions come across even more timidly, as if he weren’t sure that what he brought to the song would measure up to what was there beforehand (which it doesn’t).
