Last year, Instagram user electruhnn found himself in the middle of a conversation with a woman that was just as bizarre as it was unexpected. Thankfully, he caught it on his doorbell camera. In a post that has racked up over 4.4 million views, he shared the footage of a woman who showed up at the door with a surprising pronouncement. As he responded to her with a “Can I help?” she told him, “Hi, yes. I think your car might have just crashed into my car.”
That immediately threw him for a loop, and he asked for clarification. “Well, I was at my friend’s house,” she said in the video. And I was turning my car around. And then I think your car crashed straight into my car.” That is when electruhun explained why he was confused. He told the mystery woman, “But my car’s parked on the drive and it has been all day. So how can my car crash into your car?” When she responded with, “I don’t know,” he got out of the house to talk to her.
She then demonstrated the situation, pointing to the spot where his car allegedly hit her. Electruhnn rubbed his head and then told her, “I’m sorry. I just can’t fathom what you’re trying to tell me.” He pointed out, “But my car’s parked and it has… I don’t understand. What do you want? Like, my car can’t hit your car. You’re the one turning round. You’re the one driving. You backed into me.” The woman presented one argument: “Your car was in the way.”
She stuck to her argument
When electruhnn tried to argue that his car was in his driveway, she seemed to tell him that since she needed to turn, his car was the issue. Then she shocked him further by asking for his insurance details since his car hit hers, saying, “Because my car is now damaged. And I am now injured.” He asked her incredulously if the company would believe her claim. She seemed to completely believe they would because “It’s very obvious there is damage.”
Exasperated, electruhunn asked, “How do we resolve this? That is f—-ing ridiculous. I’m sorry. I don’t know what goes through your head. But a parked car cannot hit your car. Okay. You backed into me. That’s how things work. That is the law of physics. Now, you cannot claim my insurance. I need your insurance details.”
She responded by saying that she didn’t understand what he was saying and asked for his insurance again. Outside of electruhunn’s post, we do not have any other information on the situation, making us reliant on his perspective. So none of these details should be considered verifiable facts.
According to NST Law, determining fault begins with the cause of an accident, noting that it often comes down to whether negligence occurred. Negligence is defined as the failure to act with the level of care a reasonable person would use under similar circumstances. Many common causes of accidents, such as distracted or impaired driving, are clear examples of negligent behavior. Of course, it can also be that they shouldn’t be behind the wheel.
When a driver fails to follow traffic laws or exercise reasonable care, their actions put everyone at risk. NST Law notes that establishing negligence typically involves reviewing evidence such as surveillance footage.
Instagram, as a whole, seemed just as baffled as electruhunn was. One user advised, “You should have used an analogy. Like: if your finger pressed my doorbell, did my doorbell rang your finger?” Another person alleged, “Her injury is between her ears.” One person couldn’t believe her argument was real, asking, “Is she alergic to responsibility?”
Many others wondered the whole thing was a prank. One Instagrammer wrote, “I am so invested I need details…I hope this is prank…. He has the patience of Job, to have entertained her idiocracy for so long.”
NST Law points out that knowing the most common causes of car accidents can help drivers recognize dangerous behaviors and avoid preventable risks. Most crashes are caused by preventable behaviors such as distraction, speeding, or impaired driving.
When drivers are distracted by things like checking a phone or simply daydreaming, they lose focus and miss critical hazards. However, in one case of car damage, a city claimed government immunity and denied the driver’s claim for compensation.
If you ever find yourself in a situation where another driver’s negligence caused an accident, NST Law advises that you collect as much evidence as possible. They suggest taking photos of the vehicles involved, as well as the scene of the crash, and exchanging information with the other driver. Most importantly, they say that you should not apologize or say anything that could be considered admitting fault.
