A Detroit musician named Blizzy, who goes by rns.gloo on Instagram, recently encountered a situation that shocked him. While he was in a GMC, presumably his, a white car allegedly rolled into the vehicle. The video, which has racked up over 4.4 million views, shows a situation so bizarre that Blizzy noted in his caption, “If I didn’t record it no one would believe , it who leaves they kids unattended in a running vehicle?”
The video starts with Blizzy calmly getting out of the passenger side of the vehicle after the collision. At first glance, the angle of the impact looked like he drove into the other car. However, as the camera moves through the video, it is visible that his car lines up with some of the parking guides, while the other vehicle seems to have drifted into him. Blizzy walks up to the back window and immediately exclaims, “Oh sh-t! Oh Sh-t!” Then he zooms in, and we see what surprised him.
In the front seat of the car that allegedly hit him is a toddler. We hear him panic as he quickly moves around the car and opens the passenger door, telling the child, “Hey, calm down, calm down. When he bends into the car, we see the kid crying and hiccupping as they cling to the steering wheel and their tablet, all while music blares over the radio. Blizzy calls the kid to him and seems to pick the child up before the video ends abruptly.
A distressing situation with no answers
Many of Blizzy’s viewers wanted an update. However, the only time he responds is to tell one viewer, “you don’t want a update trust me.” Aside from that, Instagram was in disbelief and responded with a lot of jokes. One quipped, “Thats lil bro prolem he was textin n drivin..” Another joked, “Lil man was asking ChatGPT how to throw it in reverse.” A third joked, “Lil homie bout to do 2-5 in the playpen,” and a fourth wrote, “Theyll just give anyone a license now”
Others were more concerned about the implications. One user asked, “What do you even tell the insurance? Like yo a 2-1/2 year old hit me while I was parked.” Someone else pointed out the danger, saying, “Man this is a major lesson. I leave my older kids in the car thinking it’s all good cause they would never touch the brake but- since bmw decided to put the controls low in the middle console they could maybe slide into neutral?”
This incident is a sobering reminder of why you should never leave children alone in a vehicle. According to Michigan Auto Law, it can actually be illegal to leave a child unattended in a car in Michigan. The law prohibits anyone responsible for a child under the age of 6 from leaving them unattended if it poses an unreasonable risk of harm. Depending on the outcome, penalties can range from a 93-day misdemeanor to a 15-year felony if the situation results in death.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also highlights that vehicle rollaway is a real danger when kids are left unsupervised. Most newer cars are equipped with Brake Transmission Safety Interlock systems, which require a foot on the brake to shift out of park. However, it is still crucial to never leave keys in the car or the vehicle running. Additionally, they advised that parents should always verify if the car has a BTSI system.
The NHTSA emphasizes that backover incidents, heatstroke, and power window injuries are all significant risks. They advise that you should always walk around your vehicle to check the area before backing up and teach kids that cars are not playgrounds.
Whether it is a quick errand or just a short stop, the consensus from experts is clear. Saginaw Township Police Lt. Gary P. Grauf told Michigan Auto Law that even though it might be inconvenient to bring kids into a store, he has never left them alone in a car. It is just not worth the risk, especially when you consider how quickly a child can move or accidentally shift a car into gear.
He reportedly advised that keeping your keys out of reach and keeping your vehicle locked are habits that every driver should prioritize to prevent these kinds of situations from ever happening. Additionally, if you see a child alone in a car, you should always take action, because protecting children is everyone’s business.
