Even though Avatar: The Way of Water didn’t have much going for itself in the way of a compelling narrative and came off as more than just a little generic, a YouTube insider explains why you shouldn’t write off the franchise just yet.
Grossing more than $2.1 billion and becoming the fourth highest-grossing movie of all time, it’s safe to say that James Cameron doesn’t need the approval of critics, or his audience, for that matter, to continue making Avatar films.
That being said, the second movie turned a profit in part for being a follow-up to the highest-grossing film in history, a return more than a decade in the making. Cameron might not be able to rely on that sort of hype for his planned sequels, and the fact that he shot the second and third entries back-to-back doesn’t help his case either.
Does that spell disaster for the franchise given the fact that most people found The Way of Water too shallow in the narrative and characterization departments? Well, according to YouTuber Marcus Turner, best known for his Cosmonaut Variety Hour channel dedicated to the entertainment medium, sources close to production have said the Avatar sequels are going to be absolutely bonkers.
“James Cameron… he’s got a plan,” Turner said. “It’s the simplicity of the story. It’s not trying to do anything crazy… yet. Apparently, 3 and 4, go f*cking crazy. I know people who worked on these movies, and they worked on all of them together.”
You can watch the video for yourself down below. Turner talks about the sequels at around the 8-minute mark.
Should we give Avatar another chance, or is it going to be all downhill for Pandora and its people from here? Either way, we still have a long wait ahead of us until the untitled Avatar 3 makes its way to theaters on December 20, 2024.
