Billionaire influencer Becca Bloom is sparking a massive conversation about dating dynamics by arguing that men should foot the bill on dates, the Daily Dot reported. In a recent TikTok video posted under the handle @beccaxbloom, she laid out her case for why the traditional 50-50 split isn’t as fair as people often think.
The video has clearly struck a nerve, racking up approximately 1.4 million likes. And it triggered a heated debate in the comments section about what equality actually looks like in modern relationships.
Bloom doesn’t view equality as just splitting a restaurant check right down the middle. She argues that because of systemic issues, a 50-50 split can actually place a heavier financial burden on women. “Women live in a society where equality has never existed in the first place,” Bloom said.
She pointed to the gender pay gap as a primary driver of this imbalance
She claimed that women earn “80% of what a man makes for the same full-time job.” While it is worth noting that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics typically calculates the pay gap by looking at median earnings rather than comparing identical roles, her point about financial disparities is resonating with a lot of people.
Beyond just salary, Bloom highlighted that women often face hidden costs that men don’t necessarily encounter. She mentioned that social expectations regarding appearance can lead women to spend around $400 a month on grooming and beauty products.
She also brought up the issue of personal safety, noting that women face a greater risk of violence when dating. She pointed out that many women have to take extra precautions, like sharing their live location with friends or carrying safety items, just to feel secure during a night out.
The response in the comments has been split, but a surprising number of users are backing her perspective. One commenter wrote, “Her point is not invalid just because she’s rich.” Others echoed the sentiment by calling for equity instead of just equality, bringing up additional financial burdens like the cost of menstrual products and the expenses tied to motherhood.
Of course, not everyone is on board with her take. Some commenters pushed back on her wage gap figures, suggesting that differences in career choices and total working hours play a bigger role in earnings than she acknowledged.
Others felt that because Bloom is a billionaire, her perspective on dating expenses might be difficult for the average person to relate to. There was also a significant portion of the audience arguing that financial expectations should be negotiated between the two people on the date, rather than being dictated by gender roles.
She summed up her position by saying: “Equality isn’t identical treatment. Equality is balanced responsibility.”
