Bettina Anderson took to Instagram Monday to address the questions building around the three-day celebration she and Donald Trump Jr. held across a pair of private Bahamian islands. She addressed the controversy herself, focusing her response on money, friendship and the motives behind the gift.
The Washington Sun reported Monday that ProPublica had found Umar Kremlev, a Russian businessman with documented ties to Vladimir Putin, put hundreds of thousands of dollars toward the wedding weekend. Kremlev reportedly rented out a private island for the occasion, put on a fireworks show, and had members of his team help plan parts of the festivities, according to the outlet.
“It was an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful,” she wrote, adding that the couple only decided to marry that Friday after their plans changed, meaning the multi-day event was never intended to be their wedding weekend.
The wedding gift came with questions of its own
She argued further that the gift did not necessarily have a political motive behind it. “Friendship doesn’t require a political motive. Generosity doesn’t automatically come with an agenda. And sometimes a wedding gift is simply a wedding gift.”
Kremlev heads the once Russian-state financed International Boxing Association, and Ukraine currently sanctions him over his ties to Putin’s security circle. The payments themselves reportedly came from IB Challenger, a Dubai-based entity Kremlev set up as Europe grew more hostile to Russian businesses. The roughly 50-person guest list reportedly included a comparatively large group of Russian attendees, whose presence perplexed some of the other guests.
That confusion apparently extended to Trump’s own family. Eric Trump’s spokesperson told ProPublica he has “no clue who this person is, nor has never heard his name” when asked directly about Kremlev, despite the wedding’s unusually small guest list. President Trump skipped the festivities entirely, a decision he’d floated weeks earlier while citing other demands on his schedule.
The political reaction quickly took two opposing forms. Rep. Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, is pushing for answers about what Kremlev may have gotten in return for his generosity. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna pushed back the other way, framing the ProPublica story as part of a broader pattern of attacks surrounding the ongoing Russia-Ukraine peace negotiations.
When asked whether Kremlev’s ties to Putin raised concerns, the White House pointed The Washington Sun to Anderson’s Instagram post, where she wrote, “We are fortunate to have wonderful friends from all over the world, and we will never be embarrassed or apologetic about being grateful for them.”
