The New York Post, one of Donald Trump‘s most reliable media supporters, has published a sharp editorial criticizing his administration over serious ethics concerns. The Post called out several issues that it says reflect badly on Trump and his inner circle.
According to the Post, Trump’s Justice Department settled a lawsuit with the IRS in a way that guarantees Trump and his family will never face an IRS audit again. On top of that, a $1.8 billion fund was created to compensate people who claim they were targeted by “lawfare” under the Biden administration, with no requirement to prove anything. The Post compared this to the blanket pardons Joe Biden gave to his own family members before leaving office.
Trump’s personal finances have also come under scrutiny. His personal fortune has more than doubled since he began his second term, going from $2.4 billion to $6.3 billion. His sons’ crypto dealings with foreign governments have added further fuel to the controversy.
The ethics criticism is not coming from the left alone – Republicans are pushing back too
Mediaite points out that The Post is not alone among right-leaning voices raising concerns. Several Republican senators have spoken out against the $1.8 billion Anti-Weaponization Fund. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s meeting with the GOP caucus to discuss the issue was described as a “shtshow.”
Senate Majority Leader John Thune sent his members home shortly after the meeting wrapped up. The Post’s criticism goes beyond just bad optics or poor communication. Its editorial argues that Trump’s policies are sending the wrong message to everyday Americans. This concern is especially relevant given that Trump has also faced criticism for how his immigration orders have affected legal applicants, raising further questions about the administration’s priorities.
The Post concluded by saying that someone in the administration needs to get on top of this situation quickly. The editorial made clear that this is not simply a matter of how things look on the surface, but about the real-world message being sent to the public.
Trump has long relied on the Post as a friendly platform, making this editorial all the more notable. The paper’s willingness to publish such direct criticism signals that frustration with the administration’s ethics problems is spreading beyond its usual critics.
Tensions have also been rising on other fronts, with a Navy Secretary’s bombshell testimony about Iran and Taiwan adding to the mounting pressure on the White House. It remains to be seen whether the White House will respond to the editorial or adjust its approach in any meaningful way. But with Republican senators already pushing back and one of Trump’s most trusted outlets calling him out, the pressure on his administration is clearly building.
