Eric Dane, known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has died at the age of 53. His death comes less than a year after he publicly revealed his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
According to People, his family confirmed that he died on Thursday afternoon. They said he spent his final days with his wife, close friends, and his two daughters, Billie and Georgia. The family asked for privacy during this difficult time.
Dane first announced his ALS diagnosis in 2025, about 10 months before his passing. During that time, he became an advocate for ALS awareness and research. Born in San Francisco in 1972, he lost his father when he was just 7 years old.
Eric Dane’s path to acting was accidental, and he spent years struggling before finding success
Dane told an outlet in 2014 that he was a water polo player in high school, and when his season ended early, he ended up playing Joe Keller in a production of All My Sons. He instantly fell in love with acting, calling it “the greatest feeling ever!” After graduating, he moved to Los Angeles with very little money and spent eight years “partying” and getting into “a lot of trouble.”
He started his career with guest spots on Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years, and Roseanne, and had a recurring role in Gideon’s Crossing. He then appeared for two seasons on Charmed before landing his breakout role in 2006 on Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Mark Sloan, known as “McSteamy.” The role was so popular that it was expanded into a main role. Fans of the show will be glad to know that a popular Grey’s Anatomy actor is set to appear in more Season 21 episodes.
Dane left the series in 2012, with his character being killed off. He later said in 2024 that he felt he was “let go,” explaining that he had been struggling with addiction and had become “very expensive” for the network. He said he “wasn’t the same guy they had hired” and praised creator Shonda Rhimes for being “really great” about the situation.
After Grey’s Anatomy, Dane starred as Admiral Tom Chandler in The Last Ship from 2014 to 2018. He then took on the role of Cal Jacobs in Euphoria, which he found “freeing.” He told Men’s Health in 2022 that he felt a strong responsibility to “hit every note” to show the character’s humanity, as Cal lived a “fragile kind of existence.” His film credits include Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day, Burlesque, American Carnage, and Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
Dane married actress Rebecca Gayheart in 2004, and they had daughters Billie and Georgia in 2010 and 2011. In 2009, a private video involving Dane, Gayheart, and another woman was leaked online. In 2011, he entered rehab for painkiller use following a sports injury. Regarding the video, he later said in 2019, “Three consenting adults, one of them being my wife? I wasn’t doing anything wrong,” adding, “I have no regrets nor do I make any apologies for my life experience.”
Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018 but later filed to have the divorce dismissed in March 2025. Grey’s Anatomy has seen many of its stars make difficult decisions about the show over the years, much like Ellen Pompeo’s reasons for staying with Grey’s Anatomy. Eric Dane is survived by his two daughters.
