Florida groom broke both arms in a crash on the way to his wedding. Somehow he still got married that same day

Florida couple Kapri DeRamus and Tyasia Thomas tied the knot in an emotional hospital room ceremony after the groom was critically injured in a head-on car crash while driving to their wedding venue.

Just an hour before the ceremony was scheduled to begin, Tyasia Thomas got a phone call telling her that her groom had been rushed to Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC). Thomas and her family immediately headed to the hospital. She later recalled that her biggest fear during the drive was that she could lose him.

Instead of walking down a traditional aisle, Thomas found herself standing beside her heavily bandaged fiancé in a hospital room. The couple decided they weren’t going to postpone the wedding.

They were determined to make the day special

According to The Independent, the incident happened on a Saturday afternoon in Altamonte Springs, Florida, roughly 20 minutes north of Orlando. Kapri DeRamus was driving to the wedding venue to marry Thomas, his partner of six years, when the crash happened just 15 minutes from his destination.

DeRamus was stopped at a traffic light when a speeding vehicle lost control, struck the road median, and crashed directly into his car. The two vehicles collided head-on.

The crash left DeRamus with serious injuries. According to the Altamonte Springs Police Department and the couple’s legal representation, Osborne, Francis & Pettis, he broke both arms, fractured his jaw, suffered a broken rib, and sustained a significant laceration across his knee.

Speaking during a later press conference, DeRamus recalled the aftermath of the crash as a blur. He said he was completely delirious and didn’t know what had happened to him.

Once doctors stabilized DeRamus, the couple had to decide what to do about the wedding. They could have canceled the ceremony and rescheduled it for another day. Instead, they decided to bring the wedding to the hospital.

Later that evening, family members and close friends gathered inside the ORMC hospital room as the couple exchanged their vows.

The ceremony was officiated by DeRamus’ grandfather. Local media footage captured the moment he pronounced them married, announcing, “Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, Mr. and Mrs. Kapri DeRamus.”

Despite having both arms broken and dealing with the injuries from the crash, DeRamus smiled as his new wife leaned over the hospital bed to share their first kiss as a married couple. The moment was met with cheers and tears from their family and friends.

For DeRamus, getting married despite everything that had happened was important. He explained that he wanted to wear his wedding ring as a symbol of the six years he and Thomas had spent together and the life they planned to build.

Now the real challenge begins

DeRamus was released from the hospital a few days later and began his road to rehabilitation. But getting married was only the beginning of what the couple now has to deal with.

Thomas’ brother launched a GoFundMe campaign to help with their mounting expenses. The couple’s honeymoon has been replaced by medical bills, a totaled vehicle, a sudden loss of regular income, and the everyday costs that come with a serious physical recovery.

As of the publishing of this piece, the couple has raised 66% of their target.
