A Florida mother who allegedly left her four children home alone while traveling to Las Vegas for work was arrested after deputies arranged to meet her when her flight landed. According to Fox News, the authorities said the children, ages 9, 11, 12, and 14, were found without adult supervision at their Kissimmee home, prompting an investigation into their mother’s travel plans and childcare arrangements.
As per the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the home shortly after 8:30 p.m. They found all four children alone, and one of the children had been injured. When deputies contacted the children’s mother, 50-year-old Miller, by phone, she reportedly told them she was working in Las Vegas and planned to return to Florida two days later.
The arrest came two days after one of Miller’s children called 911 and reported that a dumbbell had fallen on her 9-year-old brother’s head. Fire rescue crews transported the boy to Celebration Hospital, where he received treatment before being discharged.
She was arrested at the airport
Miller told deputies that she had allegedly arranged for a babysitter to travel from Tampa each morning to help the children get ready for school and check on them afterward. However, the babysitter was not expected to remain at the home overnight.
Investigators also contacted the children’s father, who agreed to take all four children to his home while deputies prepared to meet Miller when she returned. The sheriff’s office said deputies arrested her after her flight landed.
Miller was charged with four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm and booked into the Orange County Jail. The charges relate to the alleged lack of proper supervision while she was away. Sheriff Chris Blackmon said the agency would pursue cases involving children who are not properly supervised or cared for by their parents.
“The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office will not tolerate child neglect,” Blackmon said. “These cases will be investigated, and charges will be brought against the parents who are not properly supervising or caring for their children,” he further added.
The RF Law Group states that according to Florida law, child neglect without great bodily harm is a third-degree felony, and the maximum penalty for a conviction for this offense is a $5,000 fine or five years in prison. The charges can happen when witnesses see the child in a situation that is acutely dangerous for them or if a witness has evidence that the child was home alone while the parents were away at work or somewhere else.
