Hot sauce maker says he labeled his capsaicin extract ‘DO NOT OPEN’. Then his friend’s boyfriend opened it: ‘Cover the ER bill’

Dead Dove: Do Not Eat.

A hot sauce maker is reportedly facing a bizarre demand for payment after his friend’s boyfriend ignored clear warning labels and opened a jar of high-potency capsaicin extract, according to a Reddit post by u/NoQuestion9886 in r/ComfortLevelPod. The incident apparently happened after a power outage forced the hot sauce maker to move his temperature-sensitive supplies to a friend’s apartment.

The 45-year-old hot sauce maker uses a pure capsaicin extract for competitions that reportedly ranks around 2 million Scoville. He says he handles the substance with extreme caution, often wearing gloves and goggles.

Before moving the jar to his friend Kaleigh’s apartment, he wrapped the container in red electrical tape. He also wrote a warning on the lid in Sharpie that stated, “NOT FOOD. CAPSAICIN EXTRACT. DO NOT OPEN. GLOVES + GOGGLES ONLY.” The hot sauce maker stated he also verbally warned Kaleigh and her boyfriend, Louis, that the red jar could put them in the hospital.

Louis apparently wanted to prove the jar was a scam

Louis, in his 30s, reportedly had issues with the hot sauce maker bringing items into the home. Later that night, Kaleigh reportedly called the maker while a loud argument was happening in the background. According to the maker, Louis had opened the jar as he believed Kaleigh should not have “secret stuff” from another man in a fridge he helps pay for.

He also reportedly wanted to prove the contents were a scam. After popping the lid, Louis allegedly leaned in to sniff the extract, then dipped a finger into the jar. He then rubbed his eye, which appears to have caused an immediate reaction.

In the resulting panic, he reportedly knocked the jar off the counter, spilling the extract across the kitchen and his new $2,800 gaming laptop. The fumes apparently forced an evacuation. Louis required an ambulance ride and an emergency room visit to have his eye flushed, according to the maker’s account.

The laptop was reportedly ruined, as a repair shop refused to work on it due to the chemical contamination. Louis also allegedly told paramedics he opened the jar because he felt he had a right to know what was inside. However, he appears to have taken a very different view of events by the following morning.

The situation escalated when Louis texted the hot sauce maker. He reportedly demanded that the maker pay his $1,900 medical bill, replace the laptop, and provide what he called a “formal apology for bringing a weapon into our home.” Louis also allegedly told mutual friends that the maker attempted to poison him and that the jar was a trap.

The hot sauce maker refuses to pay for the damages or apologize. He points to the clear labeling and the verbal warning he gave before leaving the items. While he admits he feels bad that Louis was injured, he maintains the incident was entirely avoidable.

Commenters on the original post questioned how Louis could have received a final bill processed through insurance within 12 hours of the hospital visit. However, the story only reflects the hot sauce maker’s account, and Louis does not appear to have responded publicly. The hot sauce maker appears set on refusing both the $1,900 bill and the laptop replacement, which means Louis would likely need to pursue recovery through small claims court.
