Las Vegas woman’s overpacked suitcase bursts open mid-flight to Dallas. Now she’s staring down 20 years in prison

Bet she's wishing this stuff had stayed in Vegas.

A woman’s attempt to smuggle 75 pounds of marijuana on a flight from Las Vegas to Dallas ended badly when her suitcase burst open mid-flight. Jennifer Manzanares-Herrera, 25, is now facing drug charges that could land her in prison for up to 20 years.

According to the Dallas Police Department, the suitcase belonged to Manzanares-Herrera and was carrying dozens of vacuum-sealed bags of marijuana. The police received a call from an airline after someone spotted a “large amount of marijuana hidden inside” the suitcase, which had apparently opened up during the flight. It is unclear at what point during the journey the bag gave way, but by the time the flight landed, the situation was impossible to ignore.

Detectives were able to link Manzanares-Herrera to two other suitcases, and together, all three suitcases held 75 pounds of marijuana. According to Brobible, she was arrested before she could leave the airport and charged with possession of marijuana between 50 and 2,000 pounds, a second-degree felony that carries up to 20 years in prison. The scale of what she was allegedly carrying made it clear this was not a small personal stash, but a deliberate and large-scale smuggling attempt.

Smuggling drugs on a commercial flight is a serious gamble that rarely pays off

The Dallas Police Department maintains a presence at Dallas Love Field specifically to detect and stop illegal drugs from moving through the airport. Officers work closely with airline staff and airport personnel to flag anything suspicious, which is exactly how this case came to light.

If she had managed to get the marijuana past security, she could have potentially avoided detection and made it to her destination without issue. However, the suitcase bursting open mid-flight meant she was caught before she even had a chance to walk out of the airport.

Now she faces a felony charge that could define the next two decades of her life. Drug traffickers use many different methods to move drugs across state borders. Some ship their product through the mail, while others hide it inside tractor-trailers packed with everyday goods.

Some even recruit unsuspecting people to carry drugs on their behalf without fully disclosing what they are transporting. But no matter the method, each approach carries serious legal risks, and law enforcement agencies across the country are well aware of the common tactics.

Commercial airports are particularly risky places to attempt drug smuggling. Security screenings, trained law enforcement officers, and airline staff who are alert to unusual behavior all make it very difficult to move large quantities of illegal substances through an airport undetected.

A bag weighing as much as Manzanares-Herrera was carrying would likely have raised red flags at multiple points, even without the added problem of it bursting open in the cargo hold. The failure of Manzanares-Herrera’s suitcase turned what might have seemed like a straightforward plan into a costly mistake with very serious legal consequences.

Meanwhile, on a completely different note, a woman shocked by a Tinder catfish’s audacity after meeting her match in person went viral online. As authorities continue to crack down on drug trafficking at airports across the United States, cases like this one serve as a clear reminder that the consequences of getting caught are very real and very severe.
