Man says his friend waved off $65 dinner repayment. Then he decided to change his mind two weeks later while playing basketball

Money is not worth straining a friendship.

A TikTok creator named Maxwell, who posts under the username @maxwellsvision and previously went viral over a coffee shop tipping dispute, shared a story about an alleged financial disagreement with a friend. His video details how the friend waved off a $65 dinner repayment, then apparently demanded it two weeks later. The trouble started during a birthday dinner for a female friend.

Everyone was having a great time, but when the bill arrived, Maxwell claimed he had left his wallet at home. He confirmed his wallet was safe at home using an AirTag, but that didn’t help him settle his $65 dinner tab at the restaurant. He claims the restaurant’s Apple Pay machine was broken, and he was in a tough spot. He supposedly reached out to his friend, Jack, and offered to cover the cost immediately via Zelle if Jack would pay the bill.

Jack says he insisted Maxwell shouldn’t worry about it. “You don’t gotta Zelle me nothing,” Jack told him. Maxwell took the $65 dinner as a genuine favor. He figured he would simply treat Jack to a meal or an event in the future to balance things out, as that is typically how friends handle these kinds of situations. Everything seemed fine until two weeks later when the group met up at the gym to play basketball.

Jack apparently expected that money back the whole time

While they were hanging out, another friend named Eric supposedly asked for some cash to buy a Gatorade from a machine. Maxwell claims he had $4 on him and handed it over to help out. Jack witnessed the exchange and immediately confronted Maxwell, calling the moment crazy. When Maxwell asked what the issue was, Jack made his frustration clear.

He accused Maxwell of giving money to others while he still owed Jack for the $65 dinner. “I paid for your dinner, you said you would pay me back,” Jack claimed. Maxwell was taken aback, as he claimed that was not what happened at the restaurant. He reminded Jack that he had explicitly tried to send the money through a payment app that night, but Jack had refused.

Jack, however, argued that he had only said those things to be polite and still expected reimbursement. Reportedly, Jack even suggested he would understand if Maxwell didn’t have the money, which Maxwell felt insinuated something about his financial situation. In the video, Maxwell claimed he has no issue paying people back when a situation calls for it. However, he views things differently when a friend offers a favor and then asks for the money later.

“When you ask me to pay you back, it seems like you’re counting favors,” Maxwell said. To avoid further tension, he immediately repaid Jack for the $65 dinner via Zelle. He decided the payment wasn’t worth straining their friendship, even though the request caught him completely off guard.
