Mechanic allegedly helps someone change an air filter. Then he is served with a $100,000 lawsuit: ‘Emotional damage’

"They don't even pay me a single dollar."

A 24-year-old mechanic from Maryland claims he is facing a lawsuit worth more than $100,000, not because he scammed anyone, but apparently over a video he posted of himself helping someone change an air filter. Mac, who runs Mac’s Mobile Mechanic in Frederick, shared his situation in a TikTok video, reporting that he has little money to spare and cannot afford a lawyer.

“I am getting sued over a video I posted about helping someone change their air filter,” he claimed. “Thought that sounded pretty crazy too, until I saw how much they were asking.” Mac is known on social media for sharing videos about tools and his repair work.

He professed that he started his mobile mechanic business about “six months ago with one goal in mind, and that was to help people,” but the lawsuit has apparently left him worried about how he could defend himself. “I don’t know how to put this. Basically, I don’t have any money,” he added. It is pretty hard to find good mechanics these days.

The reason may sound weird

The mechanic alleged his business is a few thousand dollars in debt and that he does not have insurance. Although he also creates content for social media, Mac said he apparently does not earn much from it and is not monetized on Facebook or Instagram, “They don’t even pay me a single dollar.”

To show his financial situation, he gave viewers a look at his apartment, his truck, and the toolbox he keeps in his living room. He asserted that he bought the truck from his grandfather for $2,000 and described it, along with his toolbox, as essentially everything he owns.

Mac did not explain whether the person involved in the lawsuit was a paying customer or someone he had helped for free. He also did not identify which video led to the legal action. One commenter asked Mac what he was being sued for; he replied, “Emotional damage,” and did not provide further details about the allegation.

Data on the Maryland Judiciary Case Search & Record Portal classifies the case as “Tort – Negligence,” with Mac’s Mobile Mechanic listed as the defendant. According to Cornell Law School, “A negligent tort refers to a legal claim or lawsuit brought against an individual or entity for causing harm or injury to another person due to their negligent behavior.”

In order to establish a case of negligence tort, “the plaintiff must have suffered actual damages or injuries as a result of the defendant’s negligence. These damages can be physical, emotional, or financial in nature.” Moreover, if a plaintiff can successfully prove that all the necessary elements for the case were present, they may be eligible for compensation for their losses.
