Nobody cares Tom Holland’s new series is getting trashed by critics when ‘Spider-Man 4’ is stealing the spotlight

The thing he's out there promoting is a distant second to Spider-Man.

After months of radio silence, the Spider-Man 4 rumor mill lurched back into motion this week after Tom Holland offered several minor updates on the in-development Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel.

The longtime Peter Parker confirmed that while work was ongoing, it had been halted as a result of the writers’ strike, before he once more underlined his commitment to carrying on wielding the web-shooters for the foreseeable future. The biggest problem with the actor talking all things Spidey is that it completely overshadowed Apple TV series The Crowded Room, which is the project he’s been out there promoting.

Of course, an episodic drama airing on streaming doesn’t quite have the same pull as the next installment in a universally-beloved multi-billion dollar superhero franchise, but it might be for the best that The Crowded Room is being overshadowed by Spider-Man 4 based on the early reviews for the psychological thriller inspired by real-life events.

At the time of writing, Holland’s latest descent into dark and dingy psychological stories after the Russo brothers’ Cherry and Netflix’s The Devil All the Time only holds a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 20 percent, although the good news for his fans is that the leading man is winning widespread plaudits for his performance.

There’s probably a lot of dedicated MCU backers out there who haven’t even realized Holland is hitting the press trail for his first-ever major recurring small screen gig, such is the way Spider-Man has dominated the 27 year-old’s existence ever since he was first announced to have snagged the coveted part.
