Police reportedly detained New York Democratic candidate Kisha Skipper after she was allegedly involved in a restroom altercation with her Republican opponent’s mother. Skipper, who is running to unseat GOP Westchester County Legislator James Nolan, was said to have been handcuffed and detained following the incident involving Nolan’s mother, Donna Nolan.
The incident is said to have occurred during a break at the event at the Beczak Environmental Center, where Skipper allegedly got into a dispute with a former campaign staffer, according to Yonkers police. Nolan reportedly tried to intervene and police say she “sustained an abrasion to her lip.” Local outlet Black Westchester indicated that Skipper was asked about questionable campaign donations during the debate but reportedly left for a bathroom break without answering, shortly before the alleged altercation.
Mobile phone video purportedly showed several women confronting each other at the restroom entrance, with other attendees appearing to separate them. Several attendees claimed that Donna Nolan came out of the bathroom “bloody.”
There is no love lost between Skipper and Nolan
Nolan posted an Instagram video showing Skipper and the other women seemingly exchanging tense words in the restroom. “There is absolutely no justification for violence. Anyone seeking public office is expected to demonstrate sound judgment, self-control, and the ability to handle confrontation without resorting to physical aggression,” Nolan wrote in his statement. “These standards are not optional. This is a clear example of why she is not fit to serve public office,” he added.
Skipper aired her side in a Facebook post, denying she was arrested and blasting “misinformation,” saying her arm was in a sling. “Let me just say, I know there’s a lot of video, a lot of misinformation being spread,” she said. “No, I was not arrested. Yes, I was detained pending an investigation. Of course, I was released, and there will be more information forthcoming.”
Meanwhile, Yonkers cops confirmed that Skipper was released without charges but said the investigation is continuing, with detectives conducting interviews, collecting evidence and reviewing video footage.
“At this time, the incident appears to have been precipitated from a personal matter and has not been determined to be politically motivated,” Yonkers police said (per Black Westchester). “Currently, no individuals are in police custody and no criminal charges have been filed against any party involved.”
Skipper, president of the Yonkers branch of the NAACP, is challenging Republican incumbent James Nolan for the District 15 County Legislature seat in the upcoming midterm elections. Nolan has served as a county lawmaker since his first election in November 2021.
