Police chase down 28-year-old UK man, then post a GTA-style TikTok to mock his inability to play GTA 6: ‘Now Jack’s in prison for release day’

The GTA VI hype is real.

Police in Derbyshire, UK, are going viral after posting a TikTok video mocking a criminal who led them on a Grand Theft Auto-style car chase, saying the suspect will now miss out on GTA 6’s highly anticipated launch because of their actions. According to IGN, the Derbyshire officials shared the clip in a TikTok post. Officers are seen following a black van along residential roads while “Flower in a Hurricane,” a track from the game’s soundtrack, plays.

The editor overlaid the game’s on-screen interface on the footage, including a star-style wanted rating and a small map tracking the van. The report states officers eventually blocked the vehicle and made an arrest, and that the clip is going viral.

According to the post’s caption, the incident took place in Ripley. The suspect, 28-year-old Jack Vickrage, has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for “admitting dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, drug-driving, and cannabis possession.”

Missing out on the biggest game release in history

“Could’ve just waited a few more weeks for GTA 6 to drop… Now Jack’s in prison for release day,” the constabulary captioned its post. “Thirteen years is a long time to wait for the game, but nothing excuses driving like this in real life. Cutting corners and hurtling through residential streets with pedestrians and other vehicles in the middle of the day… save that stuff for the streets of Vice City.”

In England and Wales, the Sentencing Council sets a maximum sentence of two years in custody for dangerous driving under the Road Traffic Act 1988. It also requires a minimum one-year driving disqualification, with an extended re-test before a licence can be restored. Dangerous driving is a triable either way offence, meaning it can be heard in either a Magistrates’ Court or the Crown Court. In Jack’s case, he was already driving while disqualified at the time of the offence. The Highway Code’s penalties annex lists the same maximum penalties: two years’ custody and mandatory disqualification for dangerous driving, with disqualification being discretionary for driving while disqualified. Importantly, these are the maximum penalties for each offence—the actual terms given in Jack’s case were lower and may reflect the combination of multiple offences.

Nonetheless, GTA 6 is set to launch on November 19, and anticipation is sky-high for what many expect to be one of the biggest releases in video game history. Fans are already planning their playthroughs, from taking sick leave to creating humorous “GTA 6 contracts” that limit interruptions and guarantee uninterrupted gaming sessions.

Rockstar is going all out with its promotion, partnering with the city of Miami for a Vice City-themed takeover and collaborating with the Miami Heat to give the team special GTA 6-themed jerseys. Xbox even debuted an alligator-shaped Xbox Series X today to match the game’s Florida setting, which players can win by entering a sweepstakes.
