A man in southern Spain is heading to prison for three years and six months after he decided to set fire to a bar because they ran out of mayonnaise. As reported by Euro Weekly News, the incident occurred at a café called Las Postas, located on Avenida de Cádiz in Los Palacios y Villafranca.
The trouble started when a customer, identified as José Rafael, asked the staff for mayonnaise or ketchup to go with his montadito. These small sandwiches are a staple in Spain, and while I get that a dry sandwich is a bummer, it is just a sandwich. When the staff told him they were out of both, he did not just walk away or order something else. Instead, he grabbed a plastic bottle filled with petrol and doused the bar counter before lighting it on fire.
This happened while the bar was full of customers, which makes his choice even more reckless. The prosecution clearly viewed the situation as a major offense, as they initially sought an 11-year prison sentence.
The final outcome came after the defendant reached an agreement with the prosecution and admitted to what he did
His sentence was reduced to three years and six months, partly because he paid €9,245 in compensation for the damage he caused. The court also ordered him to stay at least 500 metres away from the café for the next 10 years. On top of that, he has to pay fines related to two minor injury offenses.
It is wild to think about the financial and personal cost of this decision. He walked into a bar hoping for a quick bite and ended up with a criminal record and a massive bill. Paying over €9,000 for damages is a high price for missing sauce, and that does not even count the time he now has to spend behind bars.
I think most of us can agree that there are plenty of better ways to handle a disappointing meal. If a spot is out of what you want, you can order a different drink, try a new snack, or just head down the street to another bar. None of those options involve arson or putting other people at risk.
This case serves as a bizarre reminder to keep things in perspective when you are out at a restaurant. If you find yourself in a place that lacks your favorite topping, just let it go. Your meal might be a little less tasty than you wanted, but you get to walk out the door when you are finished.
