Texas Senator Ted Cruz recently identified a unique group he believes is responsible for the current state of competitive Senate races. During a campaign stop in Fairbanks, Alaska, Cruz linked the energy of Democratic voters to what he described as “transgender witches.”
Cruz sat down for an interview with Fox News while campaigning alongside Alaska Senator Dan Sullivan. When asked about the high number of toss-up races across the country, Cruz admitted the situation is tense for the GOP. He noted, “there are eight to 10 Senate races that are tied or within the margin of error.”
Cruz suggested that the party currently out of power often gains momentum during midterm election cycles because those voters feel frustrated. He then claimed that this specific energy is coming from a particular demographic. “And right now, if you’re a left-wing transgender witch, you hate Donald Trump, and you’re going to show up. You’re energized.”
Senator Sullivan, who was present for the interview, reportedly nodded along while Cruz made these comments
Sullivan has a history regarding these issues that is worth noting. He has signed Republican letters that oppose protections for transgender athletes and has criticized gender-affirming care for minors. These letters specifically challenged policies that let transgender athletes compete based on their gender identity.
However, Sullivan has not always aligned with the broader party sentiment on every transgender issue. He told Alaska Public Media in 2017 that he opposed the ban on transgender troops serving in the military. It is worth mentioning that recent efforts to identify and discharge those service members have been compared to a witch hunt by some critics.
The political environment in Alaska remains quite heated, as recent data from the polling tracker maintained by The New York Times shows a tight race. In the most recent survey, Sullivan is trailing Democrat Mary Peltola.
Cruz suggested that the outcome of these elections rests on whether or not other groups decide to head to the polls. He argued that the power to overcome the current political climate lies with what he calls ordinary Americans.
“Does everybody else show up? Do conservatives show up? Do libertarians show up? Do just common sense Americans who are not lunatics who don’t think communism and Islamism are a good idea,” Cruz said. He expressed confidence that if these voters participate, Sullivan will secure reelection and the party will see success in both the Senate and the House nationwide.
Beyond these comments, both senators used the interview to create some distance between themselves and President Trump. They specifically voiced their opposition to the decision to import diesel fuel from Russia.
