Before All-New Guardians of the Galaxy launches this May in order to coincide with the new movie, the current run of Guardians of the Galaxy must logically reach its conclusion. In doing so, series writer Brian Michael Bendis intends to make an impact.

It’s no secret that Thanos is the cock of the walk when it comes to villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since being teased in a mid-credits scene back in 2012’s The Avengers, he’s been biding his time and no doubt making big moves behind the scenes. And in that time, the Mad Titan has enjoyed a resurgence in the comic book realm, so it comes as no surprise that Bendis will incorporate him in GotG‘s final issue.

The superstar scribe himself had the following to say concerning that very topic when recently speaking with IGN:

“Thanos will be returning for my final issue of Guardians, which is at least double-sized. It’s a very big finale and it wraps up a great deal of things that characters in the book have been questing for my entire run. That includes a pretty major showdown between the Guardians and Thanos right here on Earth.”

Furthermore, Bendis equates this to his run on Avengers and elaborates on the need to go out with a bang:

“We’ve been planning the finale and when I left Avengers I thought it would be cool to end gently just to gently pass the torch to Jonathan [Hickman], and looking back, though I wouldn’t have changed the story, I think I would have ended on a bigger note. Like, I think the amount of time that I spent on Avengers and being the longest-running Avengers writer ever that I should have gone out with a big blockbuster ending. I was reminded by someone at Marvel, I’m the longest running Guardians of the Galaxy writer ever and I’m going to make the effort to go out really big with the help of the writer who’s coming after me.”

Guardians of the Galaxy #19 is slated to arrive in comic shops this April.
