Wedding guest says a friend accused them of ‘conforming to outdated societal views on dating’ for refusing to give up their hotel suite

The guest used loyalty points for the suite.

A wedding guest has reportedly refused to give up a private hotel suite to a friend who allegedly wanted to hide a stay with her boyfriend from their families. The guest, who says they attended a destination wedding with a group of college friends, claims to have used loyalty points to book the suite, according to a post on Reddit by u/IfMoanaHatesTheSea in r/AmItheAsshole.

As the guest describes themselves as introverted, the suite apparently gave them a place to recharge between wedding events. The bride and groom reportedly approved this arrangement before the trip. Things grew complicated when two other friends, called “Daphne” and “Fred” for privacy, allegedly asked the guest to swap rooms.

“Daphne” and “Fred” are said to be dating but come from strict religious backgrounds that have apparently created tension. As those family pressures mounted, the pair reportedly wanted to use the guest’s suite to stay together without being seen. “Daphne” offered to pay back the difference in points, the guest claims, but the guest says they refused to move.

The guest says they just didn’t want to be part of the lie

The wedding guest says they stood by the decision as they wanted the private space they had worked to earn. They also claim they were not comfortable helping the couple deceive their families. The refusal apparently led to a heated argument between the wedding guest and “Daphne.”

“Daphne” reportedly accused the wedding guest of being selfish and hypocritical. She allegedly claimed the guest was “conforming to outdated societal views on dating” by not handing over the room, the guest wrote. However, the wedding guest appears to remain firm and does not seem to believe they were wrong for wanting to keep the space they paid for.

Most commenters on the post appear to side with the wedding guest. “They’re both adults. If they want their own room they should get their own room,” one commenter wrote. Another user argued that family disapproval did not mean the couple had to keep their relationship a secret, and that the guest likely deserved to enjoy the room they paid for.

Others suggested the couple probably had other options throughout the trip. “There was nothing stopping them from getting and paying for their own hotel room,” one commenter noted. However, the guest did not say whether “Daphne” and “Fred” ever tried to book a separate room before asking for the suite.

The account comes only from the guest’s post, and “Daphne’s” side of the argument could not be verified. Disputes over favors between friends have drawn attention elsewhere, including a woman who said she left a friend’s birthday after being volunteered as the driver for extra guests she never agreed to take home.

Wedding logistics have sparked other online debates too, including a Redditor who said they played matchmaker for their sister but were banished to the back of the room at her reception. That seating decision reportedly split the family.
