Tipping culture in the gig economy has reached a boiling point. But doorstep intimidation to tip takes the debate to a terrifying new extreme. For content creator Luna McIntyre (@lunamcintyre), a $0 tip on a late-night DoorDash delivery allegedly resulted in a menacing standoff right outside her front door.
In a chilling TikTok video with over 135,000 views, McIntyre detailed a frightening porch encounter that permanently turned her off DoorDash. She claims that after she decided not to add any tip for her driver, he lurked around her front door after dropping her order.
The intimidation began with an ignored in-app text over the missing tip. However, it quickly escalated into an armed confrontation with the driver who refused to leave her property. The fact left her wondering, “What was he going to do? If I didn’t have it [a gun] in my hand?”
A zero-dollar tip triggered immediate friction on the DoorDash app
The incident reportedly took place after McIntyre placed an order and chose not to add an upfront tip. While she acknowledged the move was controversial, she never anticipated that skipping the gratuity field would put her safety in jeopardy.
Shortly after placing the order, McIntyre allegedly received a direct message from the driver’s account, which was registered under a woman’s name. The message point-blank asked, “No tip?” McIntyre reasoned that engaging would only lead to pointless back-and-forth arguing, so, she opted to ignore the message. She assumed that the drop-off would proceed without further incident.
A while later, her doorbell camera notified her that the drop-off was complete. But before picking it up, McIntyre checked the video feed to make sure the coast was clear. To her shock, the delivery driver was allegedly still standing on her porch. To make it worse, it was not the woman pictured on the profile, but an unfamiliar man who had set the food down.
The DoorDash delivery driver rushed away when McIntyre walked out with a gun
Instead of driving away after the delivery, the man was reportedly loitering right in front of the door, waiting for her to step out. Sensing danger, McIntyre claimed that she instructed her young son to hide at the top of the stairs and retrieved her firearm. She then walked down to the entrance to confront the stranger, making sure the firearm was visible to him.
“I grabbed the gun, and I tell my son to stay at the top of the stairs, like, kind of hiding away. So I go downstairs, open the door, and he’s still standing there. But he looks at me, sees the gun, decides smartly to turn around and walk away.”
After watching the man retreat to his vehicle and drive away, McIntyre finally grabbed her food. She then inspected it for tampering and swore off third-party meal delivery altogether, reiterating in her caption, “I won’t ever DoorDash again.”
While app couriers understandably feel frustrated by low base pay, cornering customers at their private residences for tips crosses a dangerous legal and ethical boundary. Predictably, they come with equally serious retaliation risks. Approaching private residences with aggressive hostility especially in states with strong self-defense protections invites volatile, high-stakes outcomes, like in McIntyre’s case.
