Woman says her sister put 4 hours of her babysitting in a school auction basket without asking. A family paid $210 for the basket

This wasn't what she agreed to

An elementary school’s yearly silent auction fundraiser has reportedly turned into a family dispute after one woman learned her babysitting had been sold. According to a Reddit post by u/Honest_Key4811 in r/AmITheJerk, her sister listed “4 hours of babysitting by Aunt ME” in a date night basket without asking her first. The winning family paid $210 for the package, she said.

The poster said her sister, who has two children at the school, asked weeks earlier whether she could help with the silent auction. She claims she replied that she would do “whatever you need,” assuming that meant setting up or bringing food. According to her, she also expected she might watch her niece and nephew while her sister worked the event.

The mix-up apparently surfaced when an unfamiliar number texted asking whether next Saturday would work for date night. Unsure what it meant, she called her sister, who reportedly explained the basket included a restaurant gift card and movie tickets. The aunt wrote that her sister “literally auctioned me off as part of the package.”

She says her sister never asked before selling her Saturday night

The poster said her sister argued that she had agreed to help with the fundraiser and regularly babysits her niece and nephew. The aunt said she pushed back, explaining that watching family differs from spending four hours with children she has never met. According to the aunt, her sister countered that the family isn’t random, since she knows the mother from school.

The aunt said she still declined, which left her sister in an awkward position. According to the poster, the winning family bid on that basket specifically because it included babysitting. Her sister now says she was embarrassed and insists the aunt should do it once, as the money went to the school anyway.

The aunt admitted she did technically promise to help with whatever her sister needed for the silent auction. However, she said she never imagined that promise would allow her sister to sell her Saturday night to strangers. She said that point is the only thing making her question her decision.

Commenters on the thread largely sided with the aunt. One user called the sister the jerk and suggested she do the babysitting herself while her husband watches their own kids, while another noted the sister never asked permission.

The sister’s side of the story could not be verified.
