TikTok creator @kaniecoded shared a video about what she called the worst date of her life. She says she later looked up her match online and allegedly found an arrest record. She also warned viewers to check the background of the person they plan to date.
According to the TikToker, she met the man on Hinge and the two quickly transitioned to phone calls, which she prefers over constant messaging. Adopting a “let me just give men a chance” mindset, she kept talking to him despite early disagreements on various topics—describing them as “so many hills that he would try and die on.” She allegedly decided to move forward, and he planned their date.
On the day of the date, she says she drove to the restaurant while chatting with a friend on the phone. The man texted that he would be about 10 minutes late, which annoyed her since he had made the plans. Her friend persuaded her to wait, so she stayed. When he arrived, she immediately noticed his outfit, which she thought resembled 2017 fashion: a red shirt, red pants, black shoes, and red glasses. Choosing not to judge, she reminded herself, “You never know what’s going on.”
It allegedly all went downhill from there
After their meal, she wanted something sweet and hoped they could enjoy dessert together. However, the man reportedly told her he would cover dinner and asked, “Are you gonna pay for dessert?” She believes that if you invite someone on a date, you should pay for the whole experience, including dessert and any activities afterward, especially on a first date. Offended by his question, she reveals she told him she no longer wanted dessert and wanted to go home.
The man suggested they take a walk to a nearby wooded park, but for her own safety, she thought, “I’m not going to the woods with you.” Instead, he led her to a bench in the restaurant’s outdoor seating area. Wanting to leave, she narrates she tried to keep the conversation casual while looking for an opportunity to leave her date.
She tried to lighten the mood by mentioning an episode of “Catfish” and laughing about it. However, the man allegedly became upset and told her, “It’s not funny.” She had only meant to make a joke, but his reaction left her feeling uneasy. By that time, the woman was already devising her exit plan from her date.
Once the date was over, she says she rushed to her car and immediately called her friend, declaring it the worst date she’d ever had. She realized she hadn’t done her usual background check. While sitting in her car, she reportedly looked up his name and found records indicating he had allegedly been arrested for assault and battery.
The TikToker admitted she felt embarrassed, remarking, “I really should know better.” She ended her video by offering this advice to viewers: “Look these men up, guys. Don’t just go out on dates with them.”
Most viewers feared for the TikToker’s safety, with one commenter saying, “So glad you’re safe, but seek adult supervision next time you’re on Hinge.” Another viewer addressed the moment the creator could have left. “I love the optimism, but um next time run. Should of [sic] ran after he said pay for dessert,” they responded.
