Woman spends 10 months living in Europe before returning to the US. Then she realizes exactly why she feels so exhausted

A pointed observation.

Returning to the United States after spending 10 months living in Europe has left content creator @sydneywimes feeling completely drained, Daily Dot reported. She shared her perspective in a TikTok video that has already pulled in nearly one million views and over 125,000 likes.

The creator described the transition as “so jarring, to say the least.” She noticed the differences almost immediately upon landing at the airport. According to her, Americans seem to constantly “find a reason to talk to you” or search for any opportunity to strike up a conversation.

She noted that people often “make a comment, address something to you that doesn’t need to be addressed,” which she finds overwhelming. Because she is used to a different pace of social engagement, she admitted, “Like, they are just so keen to, like, talk. I just don’t have the energy for that.”

This exhaustion extends to the dining experience as well

She pointed out that American customer service is “so in your face.” She recalled sitting down at a restaurant and being bombarded with questions like, “How can I help you? What do you need?” along with a server telling her, “Great choice.”

I swear I love it here…also I know I’m an American and have probably done all these things so don’t come for me #cultureshock #movinghome #debrief #unitedstates #americans

She finds this level of attentiveness to be quite a contrast to her time in Paris, where she lived for the final three months of her trip. In Paris, she noted that “the person might not come over for a good 30 minutes,” and a server “might be smoking a cigarette.” To her, the American approach feels “so over the top,” with everyone being “so forward.”

It is important to note that she isn’t anti-American. She clearly stated, “Don’t get me wrong, I know I am an American, and I do love some things about America.” However, the sheer difference in social expectations after being away for nearly a year has left her feeling like “I’m exhausted.”

The video sparked quite a bit of discussion in the comments section. Some viewers seemed to relate to her experience, with one person writing, “Now you understand why Europeans always know when an American is present.”

Another commenter who has lived in Europe for years shared a similar story about returning to the United States. They described being approached by a random man in a store who asked if they were buying ingredients for a cake. Their internal reaction was one of confusion: “[W]hy are u [sic] speaking to me idk u [sic].”

Not everyone was fully on board with her broad generalizations, though. One viewer pointed out the vast cultural diversity across the continent, writing, “‘I’ve been living in Europe’ and it’s 44 different countries.”.

While these observations are subjective, they highlight how much our environment shapes our social battery. Whether you prefer the forward, high-energy service of the United States or the more laid-back, hands-off approach often found in Europe, it is clear that moving between these cultures can be a massive adjustment.
