Donald Trump isn’t fit for the role of president of the United States. This isn’t exactly news to most of us, but the man himself would tell you he is the best candidate for the job, despite the fact he doesn’t know the basic requirements of being the president.
Take his complete disregard for the constitution as a prime example. Despite the fact that the constitution is often taught in schools across the country, Trump evidently doesn’t even know what it contains or whether he even has to adhere to it.
What did Trump say about the constitution?
The president has said a lot of not-so-smart things since he was sworn in at the start of the year. However, his recent comments really do take the cake. In a TV interview broadcast on Sunday Trump was grilled over the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland father who was sent to a prison in El Salvador after an administrative error.
When asked if he agrees that everyone in the U.S. citizen or non-citizen should have access to due process he answered “I don’t know.” When further pressed on whether he needed to uphold the constitution he answered once again with, “I don’t know.”
The president should know
Out of all the people in the U.S., the one person who really should know what he does and doesn’t need to do when it comes to the constitution is the president. When he was sworn in he raised his right hand and swore he would “preserve, protect, and defend the constitution of the United States.” That was just under four months ago, and yet, it seems he’s already forgotten that he said that.
Maybe Donald Trump really is sundowning. Theories regarding the president’s declining mental state have been circulating online for a long time now. There are plenty of examples of him confusing pretty simple things, such as “Harvard” and “Harlem.” It’s led many to question if he might be suffering from dementia.
Now he’s openly admitted that he doesn’t know whether people should have access to due process and he doesn’t know if he has to uphold the constitution. These are fairly easy questions any president would have no difficulty answering. If he really doesn’t know what is expected of him in his role then maybe he shouldn’t be leading the country? I don’t know, just a wild thought.
Trump was possibly trying to be coy with his responses but he inadvertently ended up telling the truth for the first time in a long time. He really doesn’t know, just like he didn’t know what he was doing when he defunded essential government departments or when he implemented the tariffs. He’s just constantly winging it.
