Tyler Boebert, the 20-year-old son of U.S. Representative Lauren Boebert, has received a misdemeanor citation for child abuse. The Windsor Police Department issued the citation following an incident that took place on July 11 involving Tyler and his young son.
According to court documents obtained by Denver-based outlet Westword, Tyler was cited for “criminal negligence” in connection with the incident. The court summons states that “no death or injury occurred” during the event. Tyler became a father when he was just 17 years old.
Representative Lauren Boebert responded to the citation in a statement to People, saying the incident “stems from a miscommunication.” The Colorado Republican defended her son, stating that “Tyler has been doing a great job getting his life on track as a father and citizen over the past year.”
Tyler’s previous legal troubles and family background
This is not Tyler’s first encounter with the law. In February 2024, when he was 18 years old, Tyler was arrested on felony charges related to a series of property thefts and vehicle break-ins, continuing a troubling pattern of criminal behavior in the family. The Rifle Police Department said he faced “four felony counts of Criminal Possession ID Documents – Multiple Victims, one felony count of Conspiracy to Commit a Felony, and over 15 additional misdemeanor and petty offenses.”
At the time of his arrest, Lauren Boebert expressed her heartbreak over her son’s struggles. She said Tyler “has been through some very difficult, public challenges for a young man and the subject of attention that he didn’t ask for.” The congresswoman also stated that “as an adult and father, Tyler will take responsibility for his actions and should be held accountable for poor decisions just like any other citizen.”
By October 2024, Tyler had reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. He entered a guilty plea to one count of attempted identity theft, which is a class five felony. As part of the deal, all remaining charges against him were dropped. The case resolved Tyler’s legal issues from the February arrest.
The Boebert family has faced multiple legal challenges in recent years. Tyler’s father, Jayson Boebert, who has an extensive criminal history, was also arrested in January following an alleged domestic violence incident. Jayson was taken into custody on suspicion of misdemeanor assault and criminal mischief but was released from jail the same day. He had claimed to the police that Lauren punched him multiple times in the face during an argument at a restaurant. Lauren Boebert shares four sons with Jayson: Tyler, Brody, Kaydon, and Roman.
