New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has condemned Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after a federal agent shot and wounded a man in the Marble Hill neighborhood of Manhattan, according to The Guardian. “Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children,” he wrote in his heated post on X.
The man, identified by the New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch as a 28 year old, was conscious and taken to a hospital, according a post on X (previously Twitter) posted by the NYPD News. A five-year-old child was also reportedly inside the man’s vehicle when the shooting took place, but Mamdani said the child was not physically injured.
Mamdani later revealed that he had also spoken with President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin in an attempt to secure the young man’s release. However, he said those discussions did not produce an agreement. The mayor also called on the Trump administration to end ICE enforcement actions in New York City.
There were several protests
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said ICE officers were carrying out an operation targeting an undocumented man from the Dominican Republic when one officer fired a weapon. The department described the injured man as having alleged gang associations and previous criminal convictions, but it did not identify him publicly or provide evidence supporting those claims.
Footage published by The New York Times appeared to show armed federal agents at the scene after the shooting. Protesters gathered near the shooting scene and a hospital where the man was reportedly receiving treatment. Demonstrators chanted against ICE as police established barricades outside the hospital, where tensions escalated.
“ICE, get the fuck out of our neighborhood,” shouted Vanessa Gibson, Bronx borough president. “I’m angry that we have to be here … We are a working-class community. We don’t deserve this type of treatment from the White House.” She encouraged the crowd to get involved in opposing ICE, saying: “There are more of us than there are of them. I want this to be a moment that we turn into a movement.”
Murad Awawdeh, president of the New York Immigration Coalition, called for an independent investigation led by New York officials. He also urged DHS to release footage of the shooting and called for the officer who fired the shots to face prosecution.
