Slain Renee Good’s mom admits voting for Trump, says she thought ICE would protect Americans: ‘This is madness’

"No one can protect against others who are determined to disregard our country’s constitutional rules and values.”

On Jan 6, Renee Good, a 37-year-old committed Christian and mother of three, was shot in the head by ICE agent Jonathan Ross and died at the scene. Her death caused a wave of revulsion towards ICE across the nation, with Trump administration officials proceeding to accuse her of being a domestic terrorist.

Good’s mother, Donna Ganger, spoke to the Minneapolis Star Tribune in the wake of her death to defend her daughter from these accusations, saying she “was one of the kindest people I’ve ever known. She was extremely compassionate. She’s taken care of people all her life … She was loving, forgiving and affectionate. She was an amazing human being.”

She dismissed the Trump administration’s claims that her daughter was a “domestic terrorist” or protester involved in violence, saying her daughter was “not part of anything like that at all” and “was probably terrified.”

“I voted for President Trump”

Now Ganger has appeared at a congressional hearing focused on ICE shootings to talk about the impact of her daughter’s death. Granger told those present that “It’s torture that as her mom and as her family, we could not protect Renee.”

She then admitted that she herself had voted for Trump, having believed that his administration was there to protect Americans rather than kill them: “Our family is a very American blend. We vote differently, but we love each other deeply. I’m a registered Republican. I voted for President Trump under the impression that these agents were here to protect the citizens of the United States -innocents like our family and the others here – against terrorists, certainly not to accuse those here of being terrorists and take precious lives.”

She went on to summarize the current situation succinctly: “This is madness”, and underlined, “We need this never, ever to happen again and destroy another family or a community”. She also said this is trampling the rights granted by the Constitution: “No one can protect against others who are determined to disregard our country’s constitutional rules and values.”

As of writing, neither ICE officer Jonathan Ross nor any of his superiors have faced any real consequences for killing Good. Trump’s Department of Justice refused to investigate, leading to several prosecutors resigning. Federal authorities then attempted to restrict Minnesota officials from accessing evidence related to the case, but no prosecution, investigation, or probe resulted.

Ross was briefly placed on leave after killing Good but was then brought back to ICE and reassigned out of state on administrative duties. His current location is unknown, with the Department of Homeland Security unwilling to disclose his new role or responsibilities.
