‘Super Trump Supporter’: MAGA Cuban deported to African maximum security prison, DHS calls him ‘the worst of the worst’

He's been here for almost 50 years, but ICE just shrugged and pointed to his rap sheet.

There isn’t much to smile about in the second Trump administration, so we’ll take rough chuckles where we can get ’em. These days, that often comes in the form of schadenfreude, as we see die-hard MAGA hat-wearing Trumpites getting their lives torn apart by the very man they helped put in the White House.

Enter “super Trump supporter” Roberto Mosquera, 58, of Miami. His daughter Monica described her dad as “very pro-Trump, showing off a social media feed that included images of a grinning Donald captioned ‘We support President Trump”.

This tracks: Cubans in Miami were wholeheartedly behind Trump in 2024, distinguishing themselves as one of the few Hispanic communities to back him. Naturally, Trump repaid this loyalty with laws that prevent them from being reunited with their families, but that’s another story.

Anyhow, Mosquera has been in the United States since he was 9 and was happily living in Miami under the protection of immigration rules that favor Cuban immigrants. Just before Father’s Day, he went to his annual immigration check-in, doubtless expecting just another rubber stamp of his status. What he found awaiting him were ICE agents, who dragged him off to be deported.

Mosquera might have expected to be on a flight to Havana. Instead, he was flown over the Atlantic to the tiny African nation of Eswatini, one of the world’s last absolute monarchies and notorious for its nightmarish human rights record. He was promptly tossed into a maximum security prison and is now on hunger strike.

Has he served his time?

Homeland Security isn’t particularly bothered about this and certainly couldn’t care that Mosquera is as MAGA as they come. They point out he was convicted of attempted murder in the 1980s in Miami-Dade County and provide a long rap sheet, including a conviction for battery as recently as 2021.

But his daughter says that he’s served his time and doesn’t deserve to be treated like this:

“How we go from one moment of me hugging my dad and being with him all the time and just being his little girl and then… he’s just on a different country in prison.. for what? He did his time years ago. … It’s kind of messed up and you guys are labeling my father as a murderer. He is a plumber. Very, very hard-working.”

We suspect there will be little sympathy for Mosquera’s plight. As he’s not an American citizen, he can’t have voted for Trump, but what did he expect by supporting a man who loudly and constantly vowed to deport as many people as possible? Mosquera certainly shouldn’t be in Eswatini, but good luck finding someone willing to fight for him now.
