‘We’re talking about nearly 14M people’: Hakeem Jeffries exposes twisted logic behind GOP’s new Medicaid gutting scheme

Hakeem Jeffries tells it like it is.

Hakeem Jeffries has warned that Donald Trump’s “big beautiful bill” will affect low income Americans the most. Cuts to Medicaid are being considered with a handful of Republicans arguing that the bill hasn’t gone far enough with what’s being cut.

Four Republicans in particular have caused the bill to stall over plans for Medicaid. Lawmakers are arguing in favor of almost $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid and food stamps, two things which many low income citizens rely on heavily. This has led to modifications being made to the bill which speaker Mike Johnson outlined on Sunday. One of the changes included the promise of stopping all undocumented migrants from accessing Medicaid.

Hakeem Jeffries exposes the truth of the Medicaid cuts

Responding to the proposed bill, Jeffries pointed out that “Not a single undocumented immigrant in this country gets a dime in Federal taxpayer dollars.”  In other words, the cuts to Medicaid that this bill would bring in won’t really affect undocumented immigrants, but they will affect American citizens who rely on it, “When we’re talking about nearly 14M people who are gonna be thrown off their health insurance, we’re talking about American children.”

Jeffries went on to state that the bill would affect “everyday Americans” and “Americans with disabilities” as well as “veterans who have served this country.” It seems the GOP is scapegoating undocumented immigrants in order to bring in a bill that’s going to harm American citizens, what a shocker.

Responding on X a few Trump supporters accused Jeffries of lying. Some claimed that they knew of undocumented immigrants that were somehow on Medicaid.

An article published in 2022 which examined the migrant crisis and access to healthcare pointed out that undocumented immigrants do not have access to federally funded medical insurance programs such as Medicaid. So Jeffries is not wrong in his statement, although undocumented immigrants can sometimes receive treatment at “public and not-for-profit hospitals, federally qualified community health centers (FQHCs), and migrant health centers.”

Trump is going back on his promises

In a Tuesday press release Jeffries called out the president who had previously “promised to love and cherish Medicaid.” He further reiterated his point that “millions” would lose access to healthcare and that “hardworking American taxpayers will be forced to pay higher premiums, copays and deductibles.”

The taxes this new bill proposes will only make the cost of living even higher for those already struggling. Ever since Trump took office life has only gotten more and more expensive for people despite the president’s pre-election promises to bring down prices and make things more affordable. In his press release, Jeffries labeled the new bill the “ultimate betrayal.”
