Florida woman reports a car accident in a banana costume: ‘Is this AI? Like, are you messing with us?’

No, it wasn't AI.

A Florida woman is going viral after calling police for help following a car crash—while dressed in a banana costume. Stephanie Oropeza and her fiancé were heading home from a Halloween party around 4 a.m. Saturday when they witnessed a driver crash into The Moderne Bar in Orlando.

The driver’s black SUV smashed into the bar’s patio, destroying several tables and chairs and hitting a cement planter. The damage was estimated at least $50,000, according to ClickOrlando. The restaurant’s security cameras captured footage of the crash.

“At first we were just in shock because at first it just started [with] him driving on the opposite side of the road,” Oropeza told News 6. “And then slowly he started just veering into The Moderne. He kind of just smushed everything all the way to the front,” said Oropeza, referring to the SUV driver.

However, it wasn’t just the car accident that caused widespread shock—it was the fact that a video emerged showing Oropeza calling 911 while still in her banana costume, which many people thought was absolutely bananas. “They were like, ‘Is this AI? Like, are you messing with us?’” said Michael Nguyen, owner of the Moderne who posted the clip online. “And I was like, ‘No, no, this is really a rogue 4:30 a.m. banana just roaming the streets of Mills, just saving the day, reporting the incident.’”

The cause of the crash and the driver’s condition remain unconfirmed. Nguyen was in Japan with his fiancée when he received a call from the city of Orlando about the crash, according to WFTV and Vice. The owner said he is considering working with an architect to add more safety barriers outside the building, according to the outlets.

Meanwhile, The Moderne Bar later shared footage of her calling authorities on Facebook, saying, “First and foremost, we are extremely grateful that no one was hurt and damage was minimal in this unfortunate accident. Now with that out of the way and in completely unrelated news…we are looking for this unnamed banana hero.” The restaurant added, “We have an appealing offer for them, but they split before we could thank them.”

Oropeza said she realized she had quickly ascended to internet fame the next morning. The restaurant eventually tracked Oropeza down and thanked her with a free meal. “I woke up, and I looked up if anyone posted about the crash and then see the headline is ‘banana hero,’” she said. Oropeza told WFTV Channel 9, “I needed to at least call for help and make sure he was okay. I feel like that’s the bare minimum that you can do as a decent human being these days.”
