Is this shrinkflation, a prank, or just a factory error? A mom recorded her son opening a bag of Wavy Lay’s chips, only to find a single chip inside. That’s right: ONE chip.
“My son only got this bag of chips for Halloween. You can see it’s not open at all, anywhere,” the mom who posted under the account name @wiccked.witch says. Her young son shows the sealed, snack-sized bag of Wavy Lay’s Original and shakes it.
He carefully opens the bag, revealing only a single chip. His mom shared the disappointing discovery on TikTok, where viewers quickly turned the snack-sized mishap into a wider conversation about shrinkflation, misleading packaging, and the frustration of paying more for less.
The kid was looking forward to a Halloween treat
Having fewer chips in the bag thanks to shrinkflation is one thing – but just one chip? There weren’t even any crumbs, and the chip hadn’t been eaten. “Thanks, Lay’s!” the mother quipped sarcastically. What was supposed to be a fun Halloween treat turned into a disappointment.
The video struck a nerve with viewers, prompting many to share similar experiences. One person described opening a bag of M&M’s to find only five candies inside. Others recalled seeing comparable incidents online, and another commenter claimed they once opened a package of Sour Patch Kids containing just two gummies.
Others saw the single-chip surprise as another example of a bigger problem. “Shrinkflation is getting out of control,” one commenter wrote. Of course, the jokes practically wrote themselves. Several viewers pointed out that the boy hadn’t received a bag of chips; he’d received a “bag of chip.” Another joked that instead of getting Lay’s he’d gotten just one “Lay.”
While the air we breathe is about 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen, oxygen isn’t ideal for packaged snacks reacts with oils in potato chips, causing them to spoil faster and shortening their shelf life. To prevent this, manufacturers fill chip bags with nitrogen gas, which is inert and helps keep the chips fresh and intact during shipping. Beyond snack foods, nitrogen is also commonly used in the packaging of coffee, soda, alcoholic drinks, and other products to preserve freshness, according to Pneumatech.
A sealed bag containing only a single chip is far from what any customer would reasonably expect. If the package was genuinely sealed as shown in the TikTok video, this points to a likely manufacturing or packaging error, though the video alone cannot confirm exactly what went wrong.
If you ever open a sealed snack bag and discover it contains significantly less food than advertised, make note of the lot number, expiration or best-by date, and any manufacturing codes to help the company investigate a potential quality-control issue. It’s also helpful to document the contents and packaging with photos and to save your receipt if you bought the product.
Consumers can report issues like this to Lay’s or most other brands through their customer support channels, and may be eligible for a refund, replacement, or coupon. For suspected labeling or net-weight violations, consumers can also contact their state or local weights-and-measures agency to file a report. As of now, Lay’s has not commented on the viral video, and the TikToker has not shared any additional details.
