Colorado woman double checked the number when she got a call from the bank. Then, her entire life savings were gone

‘Once they got me into a state of panic, I was trusting of them.’

Getting defrauded is a nightmare scenario, and for a 23-year-old Colorado woman named Keira, it became a harsh reality that resulted in the loss of her savings. Keira recently took to TikTok to share the difficult experience in a video that has garnered 4.5 million views. Posting 24 hours after the incident, hoping to help someone else, she explained how she was scammed out of her life savings after receiving a phone call that appeared to be from her own bank.

She described the initial contact as feeling legitimate. When she received the call, the number on her screen matched that of her bank. Even after she did her due diligence and searched for the number online, she remained convinced she was speaking to a real representative. The caller claimed there had been fraudulent activity on her account involving a charge in Texas

She was then transferred to a second number. The woman on the other end of the line told her she was a victim of identity theft and that someone was currently at a bank branch attempting to withdraw her money. By then, Keira was in a heightened state of anxiety. She admitted, “I am a very anxious person, which I think that this, definitely helped them get this scam, because once they got me into a state of panic, I don’t know why, but I was all trusting of them.”

They then drip-fed enough personal information to keep her hooked

The scammers knew her banking habits and even identified the specific branch she frequented. They told her the branch was under investigation and instructed her to go there to withdraw a specific amount of cash. They claimed the goal was to verify if the teller was involved in the fraud.

Throughout the entire drive and the subsequent withdrawal, Keira remained on the phone with the scammer. She was told to keep the phone in her purse or pocket, effectively isolating her from receiving any outside advice or second opinions.

Once she had the cash in hand, they convinced her that the money she had just withdrawn was fraudulent and that she was now part of an official investigation. They arranged for a courier to meet her outside her own residence to collect the cash.

Despite her internal reservations, the persistence of the caller wore her down. “I’m like, arguing with her, and they are so persistent.,” she recounted. She added, “And I’m thinking like, well, if this was a scam, like, they probably just give up at this point, cause I’ve called them scammers multiple times.”

Ultimately, Keira handed the money to the courier. “I did that. I voluntarily gave over my money,” she shared, visibly shaken by the realization of what had occurred. For someone who had been saving since she was 15, the loss was devastating. She noted, “I had a moment of dumbness and they got me for my life savings.”

The TikTok community responded to her video with a mix of support and urgent advice. Many viewers pointed out the red flags she missed, such as the instruction to never hang up the phone.

Others noted that this is a widespread issue, with one user stating, “My wife works at a bank. This happens weekly at her branch. That means it’s probably happening thousands of times each day.” Two users were particularly alarmed that the scammers knew her home address, strongly urging her to contact the police immediately.

This type of criminal activity is known as vishing, or voice phishing. According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Center (FDIC), scammers often pretend to be from trusted organizations to trick people into providing sensitive information or money.

The FDIC emphasizes that these criminals are constantly evolving their tactics to create a false sense of urgency. They note that you should always verify the legitimacy of a caller by using a phone number you are already familiar with, such as one printed on your debit or credit card, rather than a number provided by an unsolicited caller.

Keira’s message to her viewers is simple but vital: if your bank calls you, hang up and call the official number yourself. However, even as she kept calling herself dumb, the community told her to show herself some grace.

I am baffled by the kindness of strangers. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I added a goFundMe link of somebody in my community that is also in need of help if you were thinking of still giving.

One user pointed out, “They count on embarrassment to keep their activity secret. Thank you for sharing your story and protecting others.” Another user had a simple reminder, “You made a costly mistake, YOU ARE NOT DUMB. You will recover, sweetheart.”

Recently, a Maryland TikToker found out that his mother fell for a romance scam that had already cost her $50K. Additionally, a Redditor uncovered a healthcare scam after tossing out two misdelivered parcels. Scams can hit anyone, so stay safe out there.
