Florida business owner allegedly threatened to shoot a Black FedEx driver in the face. Then an officer asked, ‘What did you do to make him so angry?’

All over a package pickup?

A Black FedEx driver in Tallahassee, Florida, says a routine package pickup turned violent when a business owner allegedly threatened to shoot him in the face. LeRoy C. Vann shared videos of the confrontation on Instagram, including footage recorded by a bystander outside a business on Orange Avenue.

In its report, Atlanta Black Star said Vann accused the man of headbutting him and trying to wrestle a shipping case from his hands. He also criticized the police response, recalling that one officer asked him, “What did you do to make him so angry?”

He says he was wearing his FedEx uniform and covering a pickup outside his usual route. The case was heavy, and the dolly wheels were not working, so he lifted it and carried it out himself after scanning it into the FedEx system.

The business owner didn’t like how he handled the package

The business owner then took issue with how he handled the case, according to Vann. He says the man followed him outside, headbutted him twice, and kept grabbing at the package. He also recalls the man demanding, “What’s your f**king name?”

He says he never argued with the man or treated him disrespectfully. His only goal was to finish the pickup and get back to his route. He also worried FedEx would question why he had scanned an item he could no longer deliver.

In one video, the man says he did not want the man to leave the property with an “expensive piece of equipment,” despite him being the driver assigned to collect it. His account also raises the question of how delivery workers are treated when a property owner takes issue with their work, as happened when a Spark driver said a homeowner blocked her in with his work truck.

The talk then turned to a gun. “I’m gonna get my f****** pistol and shoot you in your f****** face,” the man can be heard saying. Vann points out that the man already wore a holstered gun on his hip. He tells the man, “That’s why you had to threaten with a gun.” The man answers, “Yup.” The threat is particularly alarming given another delivery-related encounter in which a DoorDash driver was shot after asking a homeowner for directions.

The two also argued over who held authority. The driver told him, “I don’t work for you.” The man replied, “You do motherf**king work for me. When I call FedEx, you work for me.” He also reportedly claimed to be an “off-duty” deputy. Police have not publicly confirmed his identity in connection with the incident.

A woman pulled over, turned on her hazard lights, and started recording, according to the driver. He credited her with documenting the scene and later speaking to police. Other drivers reportedly urged the man to get off him as they passed.

Officers, including a K-9 unit, then arrived and found the man on top of the driver, according to his account. The case left cuts on his ankle and thigh. He told police he wanted to press charges, but officers allegedly said they needed to investigate first.

He argued in the video that a witness and visible injuries should have counted for more. “If that was me doing that to him, I would have been in handcuffs,” he said in his video. He also said officers questioned his side of the story. One allegedly asked what he had done to provoke the man’s anger, while another explanation was that the business owner “just didn’t like the way you picked up the case.” The driver rejected that reasoning, saying he had simply carried the case out after scanning it.

In his view, the man could have raised his concerns before Vann left the building. “So, if you want something, just use your words, and this could have been avoided,” he wrote. He said he contacted police on two consecutive days to follow up, but his report was still not ready. As of this writing, the account rests on his statements and the videos he shared.
