Parents often expect the occasional sideways glance when a toddler gets excited in a busy restaurant. What they may not expect is another diner confronting the child directly. TikTok creator Emily says that is what happened during an ordinary family dinner in Florida, when a stranger allegedly confronted her two-year-old son over his excitement while playing with a toy.
In a video shared on TikTok, Emily recalled being asked by her brother about the “craziest interaction” she had ever had with a stranger involving her children. Her answer was a family dinner in Florida while visiting her mother-in-law, who had taken them to an outdoor beachfront restaurant with live music.
Emily described the venue as a loud, outdoor restaurant where children were free to move around. Her two-year-old son was playing with a plastic alligator toy that snaps shut when the correct tooth is pressed. For many parents, moments like these are a familiar part of raising young children, especially when navigating unpredictable behavior during meals.
What happened next caught Emily off guard
Every time the toy closed, the toddler let out an excited yell. “Just a reminder, this is a child-friendly place. It’s very loud, and there’s lots going on. This is not like a quiet steakhouse sushi restaurant,” Emily explained.
She said the excitement soon drew the attention of a nearby diner.
“So he yells, ah! And this woman at the table, like parallel to us, turns around, gets out of her seat, and screams in my son’s face. Screams in his face,” Emily said.
Still caught off guard, she said she responded by asking, “Excuse me?”
According to Emily, the woman replied, “Well, he’s screaming, so why can’t I?” Emily responded, “Well, you’re 65, and he is two.”
She also claimed the interaction did not end there. According to her, the woman returned to her seat and made an offensive hand gesture toward her. Emily said she chose not to describe exactly how she responded, joking that doing so might get her content removed from TikTok.
Encounters like this often raise familiar questions about parenting and public etiquette. While expectations vary from one restaurant or public space to another, disagreements over how children behave around strangers have become a recurring topic in stories. For toddlers especially, these situations can be complicated as young children are still developing skills around managing emotions and behavior.
Many viewers focused less on the child’s behavior than on the reported decision to address a toddler face-to-face. “I hope I never get so old that I hate children playing,” one commenter wrote.
Another viewer was more blunt. “wtf is wrong with people. that is so sick. i’m so sorry.”
Emily said another nearby table stepped in after the incident, with one member of a group of teachers approaching to reassure her that her son had not been bothering those around them.
“Just so you know, your child is not disturbing anyone. He’s being a happy child and not just a , xxxmiserable human over there,” Emily recalled the teacher saying.
Reflecting on the encounter, Emily suggested the stranger’s reaction said more about the adult than it did about her son. She said what stayed with her was not simply that someone objected to a child’s excitement, but that the confrontation was directed at a two-year-old enjoying a game during what she described as an otherwise ordinary family dinner.
