‘Is that a real story?’: West Palm man stopped mid-dinner by a strange old man with an unusual offer. The next day, he is $1,000 richer

What followed was a night nobody would believe.

A man named Drayton Nay recently shared a story about a strange encounter at a steakhouse in West Palm, Florida, that ended with him earning $1,000 for going on a date. It sounds like something out of a movie, and many people online have been questioning whether it actually happened.

According to Brobible, Nay says in his TikTok video that he was dining at the Raindancer Steakhouse a few years ago when an older man walked up to his table and asked him to come to the bar after finishing his meal. When Nay asked if something was wrong, the man said he just wanted to talk. By the time Nay asked for his check, he found out the older man had already paid for his dinner.

When Nay made his way to the bar, he found the man sitting with his young adult daughter. The father said he was looking for someone to take his daughter out for a night in West Palm and offered Nay $1,000 just to hear him out for 15 minutes. During that conversation, the man told him, “I’m tired and old and don’t get around well, so I would like you to take her out on the town tomorrow night.”

The overnight date ended with a hotel key and a goodbye note signed ‘Elsa’

Nay accepted the offer and picked the woman up the following day. The father promised to cover all the costs, and the two ended up having a great time. After dinner, the woman directed Nay to drive to the Ritz. Once there, she walked up to the front desk, got a key, and handed it to him without saying a word. Nay says they had an amazing time that night.

When he woke up the next morning, the woman was gone. She had left behind a note signed “Elsa,” thanking him and letting him know he was welcome to stay at the hotel as long as he wanted. Florida has seen its fair share of unusual encounters between strangers, and this story quickly caught the attention of people across social media.

Reactions on social media were mixed. Some people doubted the story right away, with one commenter asking, “Is that a real story. Lol.” Nay responded to the skepticism by simply saying, “Yes.” Another user didn’t buy the story, writing, “What is the name of this movie?”

However, some viewers said they believed him because they had gone through something similar. One person wrote, “That happened to me at Weatherspoons in UK I got £20 in envolope!” Another simply added, “Life experiences can sometimes be real fairy 🧚‍♀️tales ! ♥️.”

Stories of shocking outcomes at unexpected social events serve as a reminder of just how unpredictable real-life encounters can be. While Nay’s situation is unusual, the idea of parents trying to set up their adult children is not completely unheard of.

On the r/relationship_advice subreddit, some men have shared similar experiences of being approached by co-workers or acquaintances who wanted to set them up with their daughters. In one case, a man said he was unsure how to handle it, noting that while the daughter was attractive, the whole setup felt forced.

Some commenters saw it as a compliment, while others suspected ulterior motives. One person wrote: “Steer clear. Sounds like dad doesn’t like daughter’s bf and is trying to force another option (you) to make himself happy. It will only make your work situation messy and dramatic.” Others suggested trusting your gut and avoiding the potential awkwardness.
