A group of enthusiastic servers on a Carnival cruise ship completely derailed a marriage proposal for one Texan couple, jumping the gun on the celebration before the question was even asked. Amanda Bratton, 46, was aboard the Carnival Breeze with her now-husband, Gary Bratton III, from Willis, Texas, completely unaware of the romantic surprise he had in store.
Per Newsweek, Gary had planned every detail. His grand scheme involved the wait staff delivering the ring right at the start of their meal. Once the ring was on the table, he would pop the question, and then the servers would come out with a celebratory cake and sing a joyful song.
It didn’t quite go according to plan. He didn’t even get to actually propose before the staff came and congratulated them. Amanda shared the video of the failed proposal on TikTok. While everyone’s confusion was apparent, the saddest reactions were from Gary, who cycled from irritation to sadness, and then calm acceptance as he decided to be mature about it and just soldier on.
He dealt with it better than I would ever have
“He bought the ring from the jeweler on board, and the cake and song was all added,” Amanda explained in the comments. “I think the wait staff was just trying to make it special, but he has no idea why they just randomly decided to sing and bring cake before he proposed.” In fact, he was so shaken up that when she finally said the all-important “yes,” he completely forgot to actually slip the engagement ring onto her finger.
“I was just so confused,” Amanda admitted. “I thought they had the wrong table, so I felt bad for the person that should’ve gotten it. Then all I could do was laugh.” While many years have passed since that memorable night, the happily married couple can definitely see the humor in the whole situation now.
What’s really sweet, though, is how Gary handled everything. “My husband isn’t one to do things publicly, so for him to plan this out and it go wrong was unfortunate,” Amanda said. “But it’s a total green flag that he handled it so well. He knew, if he reacted poorly, it would’ve stressed me out.”
The clip has since gone absolutely viral, racking up over 2 million views and more than 171,100 likes, with countless internet users sharing their shock and amusement. One commenter wrote, “aw he looked so sad, like it’s his engagement too and he didn’t get to go with his plan.” Another TikTok user added, “Awww I feel so sad for him, but he handled it like a champ!”

Proposals are already very hard to get right. It is incredibly easy to be discovered while you plan it. Then of course, your partner might have a response that you don’t expect. However, how do you account for other people? Amanda mentioned that the staff “kind of laughed it off” at the time, and she hasn’t received any apology from Carnival since the incident.
