A TikTok creator’s night out ended with a wrong burger, a missing takeout meal, and a wallet that disappeared along with her food.
Katie, a Texas-based creator, posted a video this week asking viewers whether she should have asked for her money back. “Please tell me if I’m being a Karen because I don’t want to be a Karen, but I feel like I deserve my money back, but maybe I’m entitled,” she said.
According to the video, Katie’s order troubles started on a previous visit to the same restaurant, when she asked for a plain, well-done cheeseburger and received one with mustard on it. She let it go at the time, saying it was near closing. On her next visit, she says she was more specific, asking for the burger “well done, plain, nothing else on it, but cheese.” The burger arrived with mustard again.
The burger was finally right. Then her whole tray disappeared
Katie says she waited before saying anything, describing herself as “a little bit of a pushover,” before having someone in her group flag down the server. She apologized while asking for the burger to be remade. “I actually ordered this plain. Could you possibly remake it? I’m so sorry,” she recalled telling the server. The question of whether “plain” automatically means no condiments, or specifically a dry burger, also became a point of debate in the comments.
By the time the corrected burger arrived, Katie says she had already filled up on fries from the first plate. She packed roughly 75 percent of the burger along with fries to take home. Her group then won a round of trivia, and she stepped away from the table for a photo, leaving her food along with her sunglasses, wallet and keys on the tray. When she came back, the table had been cleared. “They took my wallet,” she recalled.
Her sunglasses, wallet and keys were eventually located and returned, but staff told her the food was gone. Other diners have shared similar frustrations after briefly stepping away from their tables and returning to find that staff had cleared away food they had not finished.
Katie says she still paid the bill and lowered the tip from a preselected 25 percent to 20 percent before leaving. She later wondered whether she should have pushed back more after paying for food she never got to take home. It’s an awkward position for diners who are caught between speaking up and simply watching their food disappear before they have finished eating.
The comments largely sided with Katie, although they disagreed over one part of her order. Several viewers insisted that asking for a burger “plain” should have been enough to make clear that she did not want mustard.
“Plain means plain,” one commenter wrote, while another added, “dry has never been a restaurant term, ever.”
Others with restaurant experience saw it differently. One commenter who said they had been a server for more than 20 years wrote, “I have been a server for 20+ years. Plain means dry, don’t let them lie to you. You deserve your money back for them throwing out your food.”
Another commenter who said they were the general manager of a restaurant was more direct: “I’m a GM of a restaurant. You need and deserve a refund!”
Katie says she later called the restaurant to ask about a refund but reached a full voicemail box. She has not said whether she plans to leave a public review or pursue the refund further.
