‘The problem was never me’: Woman is excited to try her Facebook marketplace egg chair, but when she fell, the problem wasn’t that it was free

“Eggsactly why it was free."

A TikToker just found herself an epic deal on Facebook Marketplace, snagging an egg chair, something she has wanted for some time. She then took to TikTok to share the moment she got to try the chair and accidentally created a viral sensation. A staggering 3.2 million people first watched her pure, unadulterated joy of bringing the chair home for free. Then they all witnessed the sudden and hilarious reality check.

In the clip, Abbey tells her audience, “Guys, I’m about to sit on my egg chair for the first time!” The on-screen text adds, “I was so excited to try my egg chair I got for free off marketplace.” With The Blue Danube playing in the background, she is careful to shoo her dog, Lexi, away, noting, “I don’t want it to hit her.”

She then sits down gingerly, giggling with delight as the chair holds her weight. Then, she swings forward and everything collapses in a heap. The caption was brutally honest: “Now we know why it was free.” Thankfully, though, she figured out what the problem was. In her follow-up post, she detailed that the chair was, in fact, perfect.

TikTok loved every minute of it

In that first video, people were quick to jump into the comments section, with some even speculating that her weight caused the collapse. Others just enjoyed the comedy of it all. One user noted, “girl I’m CACKLING you were so happy.” Then came all the egg puns, and leading the charge was Wingstop, who wrote, “eggsactly why it was free.”

One user simply quipped, “Scrambled egg,” while another noted, “I fear you were a tad too eggcited.” A third hit the nail on the head, joking, “Babes you didn’t get a free egg chair. You got a free egg catapult.”

Some considered the physics of it all, with one user commenting, “lowkey not that bad, i thought the chain would snap off but the base just needs extra weight.” One user tried to comfort Abbey, saying, “Dw girl All egg chairs do that.” This comment was met with agreement, with another TikToker noting, “i think all the egg chairs are so sensitive bc even if a 30kgs person sits it would fall.”

It is worth noting that egg chairs are generally considered iconic pieces of furniture. According to Tang Kula, the egg chair was created in 1958 by a Danish designer named Arne Jacobsen for the lobby of the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. Since then, they have become a symbol of modern design and luxury.

If you are looking to get one for your own home, it helps to know that they are usually designed to be stable, but improper assembly or uneven surfaces can lead to tipping. As Tang Kula points out, checking the assembly and weight capacity is vital for safety. While high-quality models can typically hold between 250 and 350 pounds, you should always check the specific product instructions before you hop in. That there, was the real problem.

“Okay guys, I’m back with a long-awaited update on my egg chair that I got for free,” she explained in the follow-up post. “Spoiler alert, I can actually sit in it because it’s fixed now. Just want to clarify, the problem was never me, so let’s get that out of the way, okay?” She went on to explain the real culprit behind the collapse.

“The problem was that when I picked it up, it didn’t fit in my car, so we had to take it apart. When I put it back together, it was leaning a little bit. So that’s why it was wobbly, and that’s why I fell. And then we strapped it to the deck, we bolted it, so this thing isn’t going anywhere. Hate to tell you.”

Her followers celebrated the fix with her, with one writing, “i’m glad it works, anyway thanks, the last video make me laugh a lot in my depression.” While another user added, “it looks so comfy!!!”

A user noted that the solution was spot on, saying, “Brackets like that was going to be my exact suggestion!” There were, however, some TikTokers who took issue with the disparaging comments from the previous video, with one user writing, “And that’s a fact. You were NEVER the problem.”

It was great that this purchase from marketplace worked out. After all, it is always a gamble, as a man who purchased a car on the platform found out. He had intended to drive it home, except there was no floor. Then again, you can also get amazing wins from the platform. For TikToker Milly, a $50 makeup artist resulted in a cultural makeover that everything thought was worth way more.
