Woman is told she looks beautiful by a stranger who stops her. Then she realizes why the comment was actually offensive and goes back to find her

She felt it was a “backhanded” compliment

A TikTok creator said a stranger stopped her in a supermarket freezer aisle with a compliment about her appearance, prompting her to turn around and address the woman. Trag, who posts as @trag4ever, described the incident in a TikTok video. The clip, captioned only with an eyes emoji, has gained hundreds of thousands of views.

Trag said the encounter began when a white lady walked up to her and said, “Hey, I hope you don’t get offended by this comment.” She stated that she replied with “okay” and was “just trying to hear what she has to say.” According to Trag, the stranger then told her, “For you being the skin color that you are, you look so beautiful. Just your skin is so even, and you look good.”

She said she responded with a smile and a “Thank you,” then walked away. Turning to the camera, Trag questioned the wording: “But what does she mean, for me to be the skin color that I am, I look beautiful?” She described it as a backhanded compliment and added, “Like, I’m not tripping. That was rude. Oh, rude, actually.”

Trag spots the woman and walks over to address the comment directly

Trag said she looked around the aisle and spotted the other shopper. She described the woman as older, with a grey ponytail and a grey cap, while pushing a shopping cart. In the video, she stated, “There she is. I think I’m gonna just let her know.” She then approached her.

Speaking to the shopper, Trag said, “So I just want to let you know that, like, I think it is a backhanded compliment. So I wouldn’t say that to anybody else. Just say, hey, you look beautiful.” She continued, “Okay, but don’t say, like, hey, for your skin color, you look beautiful, because then, like, what does that imply? Because I believe everybody of my shade is beautiful, you know what I mean?”

The older woman replied, “Yeah. Yes,” according to the video. Trag then told her, “so I would just refrain from ever giving anybody that compliment because it is offensive. Okay, got it?” The shopper answered, “I got you. All right, thank you.” Trag responded, “You’re welcome.” Run-ins with older strangers who comment on women’s appearance have gone viral before, like when a woman realized an elderly stranger was shaming her.

After walking away, Trag turned the camera back to herself. She said, “I’m glad I did that because, you know, if you don’t tell them, how will they know? So yeah.” The exchange in the video ended on polite terms, with both women parting after the brief conversation in the aisle.

Viewers left mixed reactions under the post. One commenter questioned the stranger’s approach and wrote, “why tf would she say that.” Another noted that the woman appeared to anticipate a negative reaction, writing, “She knew it was rude that’s why she started with ‘I hope you don’t get offended’.”

Some praised Trag’s response. One viewer stated, “You handled that with so much class.” Another wrote, “I’m so happy you confronted her. I’m terrified of confrontation so I’m really proud of you.” Unsolicited comments from strangers have sparked similar debates elsewhere, including when a woman was shamed over her outfit by someone she didn’t know.

Others suggested the original comment may not have been meant negatively. One person commented, “She didn’t word it right. I think she was complementing your shade and how nice your skin is.” Another added, “I get your point but I don’t think she really meant it a backhanded comment. A lot of us do think your skin color is absolutely beautiful.”

A different viewer described a similar personal experience and wrote, “Idk I’m pretty chill. Someone said I’m pretty for an Asian girl and I just said thank you and moved on. No negativity in my heart.” One comment simply read, “Never happened.”
