Most people have accidentally mistaken a stranger for someone else. Caroline Winkler, however, allegedly found herself in a rather extreme version of this scenario and took to Instagram (thegoodsitter) and TikTok (frivolous_bish) to “get it off her chest.” Her viewers, however, were incredibly amused by the post she subtitled in the overlay as her “Honeymoon Horror Story.”
“I got back from my honeymoon last night. Hawaii. It was great. Ready for a life of live, laugh, love. Commitment and fidelity,” Winkler said in her video. Then she announced, “Something went terribly wrong on the flight back from our honeymoon. Winkler explained that she was exhausted and determined to get some sleep on the midnight flight. “Took out my contacts, put in my earplugs, sleep mask, like tried to sleep,” she told her viewers.
Without her contacts, however, she says she couldn’t really see much, and then she had to visit the bathroom around 1 AM. Winkler told her audience that she was seated in the middle seat, between her husband Justin, in the aisle, and a small woman. Since Justin was “dead to the world,” Winkler did not want to wake him. Instead, she decided to “full straddle” and climb over him and the arms of the seats to get out. She claimed that she was successful.
The trouble started when she returned to her seat
Winkler claimed that she made her way back and repeated her “straddle” move to get back into her place, but she encountered an obstacle. She claimed, “I realize that the little Hawaiian lady in our row has extended her feet all the way out onto my seat.” Winkler said that she was stuck. She had noted that between her lack of contacts and the cabin being dark, she had a very hard time seeing anything.
“I don’t know if she’s like asleep or if she’s just awake and looking at me and like refusing to move her feet,” Winkler alleged. She admitted that she stood there awkwardly trying to figure out how to proceed. Winkler told her viewers, “I’m looking at that little Hawaiian lady, and out of the corner of my eye, I see Justin’s expression, and he’s like aghast. And I look at him.”
“It’s not Justin,” Winkler told her viewers. “It’s not Justin that I’m straddling. It’s a very old, very scared 85-year-old man who I have been riding saddle style, horseback for 10 to 15 seconds. Our chests are this far away. Straddle, full split, both legs on the floor. I’m splitting it right over him.”
In the post, Winkler admitted she was still wearing her earplugs and had no idea how loud she was when she began apologizing. “I was just like, ah, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry,” she recalled. She claimed that the man was speechless. “Like, I actually felt like I was like, this is the face you see from someone you’ve assaulted. Like, I had completely scarred this man,” she said.
Winkler claimed that she eventually “dismounted” and just “ran.” When she eventually found her seat, and the still-asleep Justin, it was the row behind the man she had straddled. Winkler said that she stared at him for a while to make sure it was the correct person before reattempting the straddle.
“I couldn’t speak to the man. I couldn’t talk to him. He turned around when we landed,” she claimed, “kind of turning around like he was trying to get like an explanation or something. Pretended I was asleep. I was like, I can’t engage with you. I don’t know what to say. I’m just going to run away.” Then she finished her post, dryly stating, “So. That’s the story of how I cheated on Justin on the flight back from our honeymoon. Sorry to this man.”
Winkler’s post racked up over 892K views in less than two days, and scores of viewers responded with jokes. One Instagrammer wrote, “If I were a lasik surgeon I would just play this story on repeat as my entire marketing concept.” Another noted, “Congrats on your new role as sleep paralysis demon. You wear so many hats, I’m always so impressed!”
One TikToker shared, “Yup. You win. I thought accidentally shooting my breastmilk (on accident) while nursing my son directly at the man sitting behind me was the worst airplane story but yup. This is it”
While Winkler ran from her unintentional mistake, a clinical psychologist on wikiHow advised that if you find yourself in a position where you have unintentionally caused someone distress, the best approach is to be direct and honest. The guide noted that it is important to resist the urge to get defensive when you accidentally hurt or inconvenience someone. Acknowledge the other person’s feelings, take responsibility, and offer a sincere apology.
