A job candidate’s video of an alleger tense salary conversation with a recruiter has gone viral on TikTok, racking up 4.4 million views and more than 325,900 likes. The clip shows the recruiter offering a lower starting salary than what was allegedly promised earlier, and then softening once the candidate mentions she has proof of the original offer.
The video was posted by a creator named Kathrine, who goes by @kathrine.works on TikTok. It has also drawn over 1,100 comments from viewers reacting to the exchange.
On-screen text in the video reads, “Watch them try to offer me $80,000 salary when they for said $100,000 before.” The caption on the post simply says, “Red flag???” along with hashtags including “#corporateburnout” and “#redflag.”

In the video, a woman is shown sitting at a desk wearing a light green cardigan over a white top, with a tablet and laptop in front of her. She is on a virtual call with an off-screen recruiter. The recruiter opens by saying, “We would love to offer you the position with a starting salary of $80,000.” The woman reacts with visible surprise and asks, “I’m sorry, 80?” The recruiter confirms, “Um, yeah, that’s the salary for this position.”
The woman then explains the discrepancy, saying, “Um, I’m just confused because they offered me 100 in my first onboarding meeting.” As she speaks, the video shows her tablet displaying what looks like a meeting transcript, then cuts to her laptop screen showing two people on the video call.
The recruiter, sounding surprised, asks, “100?” The woman replies, “Yes.” The recruiter then pushes back, saying, “That’s crazy. That is so so much money for a starting position. Who said that?” The woman identifies the person as “Katie.”
The recruiter firmly denies the claim, stating, “Um, there’s no way that that’s right, so we’re not gonna be able to do that.” The woman, described as maintaining a composed expression, then says, “I have the summary transcript. At that point, the recruiter’s tone shifts. The recruiter responds, “Oh, if you… I mean, if you have proof of it, like, we can see if we can negotiate a little bit, but I don’t know if we’re gonna be able to meet your… that high of a salary.” The video ends shortly after this exchange.
The video’s comment section has drawn reactions from viewers about the salary figures and the recruiter’s conduct during the call. One commenter wrote, “100k in this economy is lower middle class tf.” Another viewer criticized the recruiter’s behavior, saying, “Wow that woman talking to you is very unprofessional.” A separate comment went further, stating, “Girl, RUN! The gaslighting here is a massive red flag.”
Some commenters extended their criticism to hiring practices in general.
