Connecticut man allegedly kidnapped 5-year-old after arguing with his mom. Then he threatened to kill them both if she called police

A Connecticut man with a prior conviction for second-degree murder is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly kidnapping a five-year-old from a New Haven bus stop and threatening to kill the child during an hours-long standoff with police.

The suspect, identified as 32-year-old Christopher Rodriguez, was apprehended by authorities following a multi-town pursuit and a statewide Amber Alert that brought multiple law enforcement agencies into the search.

According to Us Weekly, police reports and arrest warrant details released by the New Haven Police Department show that the harrowing series of events began on the evening of Monday, Sept. 14, 2026.

The suspect allegedly forced the boy into his vehicle

The incident started as a domestic dispute at a Family Dollar store in West Haven. Inside the store, Rodriguez reportedly got into an altercation with the child’s mother and a store cashier. According to court documents, Rodriguez accused the cashier of being intimate with the mother before abruptly leaving the woman stranded in West Haven.

Rodriguez then drove across city lines to a designated school bus stop in New Haven, where the woman’s five-year-old son was waiting.

Rodriguez, who is not the boy’s biological father, allegedly forced the child into his vehicle and drove away. When the frantic mother managed to reach Rodriguez by phone and pleaded for him to return her son, he refused. Instead, he allegedly threatened to draw police into a high-speed pursuit, crash the vehicle, and kill both himself and the child if she contacted law enforcement.

Recognizing the immediate danger to the child, the New Haven Police Department issued a statewide Amber Alert along with a “Be on the Lookout” (BOLO) broadcast across regional police channels. Attempts to track Rodriguez’s cellphone failed, leading specialized units to join the search.

Detectives from the Special Victims Unit (SVU) and negotiators from the regional Crisis Negotiation Team eventually managed to re-establish phone contact with Rodriguez.

During the tense, hours-long standoff, Rodriguez reportedly became increasingly paranoid. Police notes say he repeatedly revved his engine during the calls, claiming he could see police cruisers following him and again threatening to crash the vehicle. Negotiators eventually convinced Rodriguez to release the child after several hours.

In a bizarre end to the immediate abduction, Rodriguez pulled over in neighboring Bridgeport and handed the five-year-old to an unsuspecting tow truck driver. He reportedly instructed the driver to take the boy safely back to New Haven. Police quickly recovered the child, who had no visible injuries.

He’s being held on a $300,000 bond

While the boy was returned to his mother, Rodriguez remained at large, prompting a manhunt involving Officer Gregory Reynolds of the U.S. Marshals Task Force. Three days later, on Thursday, Sept. 17, tactical units tracked Rodriguez to a local hotel in Branford, Connecticut. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Rodriguez is currently being held at a correctional facility on a $300,000 bond. The State of Connecticut has charged him with first-degree kidnapping, risk of injury to a minor, two counts of second-degree breach of peace, and being a fugitive from justice.
