Former Alabama prosecutor posted bond after arrest. Then she went home, and allegedly tried to poison her husband again

Sara Baker, a 75-year-old former prosecutor from Mountain Brook, Alabama, has been returned to custody after allegedly attempting to poison her husband again, for a fourth time, while out on bond. This latest development follows her initial arrest in November 2025, when she was accused of lacing the food and drink of her husband, James, with fentanyl at least three times.

According to The US Sun, Baker had been released from the Cullman County Jail after posting a $400,000 bond. While she was supposed to be adhering to strict conditions of release, prosecutors successfully argued that she violated those terms by attempting to introduce the dangerous substance into her husband’s home again. 

As noted by KGNS, court documents reveal that on June 11, Baker allegedly contacted one of her husband’s caregivers to request an empty medicine bottle from the residence. About a week later, she reportedly returned the container, which was inside a bag, and instructed the caregiver to place it in a safe at the home. After the caregiver complied and secured the bag in the garage, they became suspicious and contacted the authorities.

The US Sun reported that when police recovered the container, they found 12 grams of a purple-tinted powder inside. Lead investigator Zachary Latham testified that a field test performed by the Cullman Police Department confirmed the substance was fentanyl, the same drug Baker was accused of using in the initial poisoning attempts. In another case of poisoning, a grandmother was responsible for the stabbing and poisoning deaths of her family.

The legal proceedings in Baker’s case were complicated by the fact that James Baker maintained his support for his wife. During a hearing regarding the revocation of her bond, James reportedly told the judge that she had not breached any conditions. 

“I have no idea why we’re here today, we kept that clean all the way,” he stated. Per The Sun, He further explained that he had personally reached out to both his own attorney and the county district attorney to request permission to see his wife while she was out on bond. In a different instance of spousal support, Matthew Uthoff helped his wife, Amber Snow, lace a pan of lasagna to cause a miscarriage. 

Despite James’ protests, KGNS noted that Judge Gregory Williams was not swayed. He ruled that even though Baker did not have direct physical contact with her husband, she still violated her bond conditions by engaging in a new criminal offense. 

Per reports, the judge specifically noted that she transported and stored a significant quantity of fentanyl at the victim’s residence. In his written order, Judge Williams stated, “Specifically, she committed a new criminal offense by transporting to, and storing at the victim’s residences, a large amount of the drug, fentanyl.” 

He further emphasized that the similarity between the new allegations and the original charges was “especially alarming.” Per the outlet, Williams added that “the continued release of the defendant poses a risk to public safety and no set of conditions will reasonably assure compliance with the court’s orders regarding the defendant’s bond.” 

According to WBRC, this legal saga began last year when Baker, a former assistant district attorney, was hit with 11 charges, including attempted murder, domestic violence, and elder abuse. The couple had been married for 29 years, a period during which James suffered a debilitating stroke that required his wife to act as his sole caregiver. Following her first arrest, the Alabama Bar Association suspended her license to practice law.

When she was initially charged, an observer, criminal defense attorney Roger Appell, reportedly characterized the case as something, “Dateline or 20/20 would pick up – this is a bizzaro in our world.” He noted that the case was unlike anything he had heard of before. “This is a case that’s gonna take a lot of time to prepare, a lot of evidence, expert witnesses, and it could take a long time. She’s going to need a really fine defense attorney,” he told WBRC.

As the case moves forward, Baker has pleaded not guilty to all charges by reason of mental disease or defect. According to The Sun, Judge Williams has ordered that she undergo psychological testing to address this plea.
