Tyler Brown, 46, woke up on a random Massachusetts morning and drove to a busy road that leads toward Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Brown allegedly ended up firing over 60 rounds at at least a dozen passing vehicles, leaving people struggling to understand why he put so many lives in danger.
Lately, some of the top universities in the United States have found themselves at a crossroads with the administration over issues like affirmative action, trans rights, and the Gaza war. Some universities decided to fold under the pressure of the Trump administration, while others, like Harvard University, chose to fight back legally.
This shooting, however, reflects a problem that has increasingly proved to be both unavoidable and apolitical in the United States. According to reports, a state trooper and a former Marine were both shot and injured. As Brown allegedly fired rounds from his car, motorists fled the scene — some even abandoned their vehicles in the middle of the road, while others hid underneath their cars.
The prosecuting Middlesex District Attorney told the Associated Press, “While people were jumping from their cars, scattering in various directions … both that trooper and that civilian, rather than going in one direction, went toward the suspect with their weapons to try to end that situation.”
Brown was eventually shot multiple times but survived and was taken to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment. He is now expected to face no fewer than two counts of armed assault with intent to commit murder, along with several other firearms-related charges.
The video has since gone viral. Surprisingly, many people in the comments section viewed the incident as an argument for why more citizens should be armed. One user whose comment received significant attention wrote, “Imagine a world where guns were outlawed, yet criminals still found ways to get them. How would honest, law-abiding citizens protect themselves, their families, and their homes? Responsible gun owners who pass criminal background checks and obey the law should not lose their constitutional rights because of the actions of criminals.”
Prosecutors said there was no immediate link between Brown and the victims targeted in the shooting. Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan also expressed her intention to push for tougher penalties against individuals who recklessly fire weapons in public spaces.
As he continues receiving medical care, Brown was deemed unfit to appear in court for arraignment. He has already been provided legal representation by the Committee for Public Counsel Services.
This is not Brown’s first run-in with the law. In 2020, he was involved in a confrontation that allegedly ended with him shooting at law enforcement officers. In 2014, Brown was connected to another case in which several people were attacked with a knife. In 2008, he again faced legal trouble over a gun-related charge.
Seemingly, the severity of his crimes has only escalated over time. Brown has previously been found incompetent to stand trial due to mental illness and has also served time in state prison.
Authorities now say he faces a long list of charges tied to the latest shooting.
